My new 30e
My new X3 30e was delivered today. Should be among the first to have the car.
Have only driven around 100km with it today so will probably write some more comments after a while but the first impression is very good! Pros: -The drivetrain is much smoother and the car is quieter (incl. acoustic glass) than I thought. -The "normal" adaptive suspension is great (had only tried the adaptive M suspension before so did not know exactly what to expect) and generally the car has a very high level of comfort. Was a bit worried as I actually desired air-suspension. -The engine sound is pretty cool vs many other plug-ins. Not a lawnmower. Okay, not a M40i either but still good sound to be a hybrid. -The car is much better looking with the colour combo than I imagined. Think also it looks pretty cool with the 20” winter tires (21” (726) rims for the summer) -Generally X3 seems to be fantastic car Cons: -None yet…. So summarising it all, very happy so far! Very happy to be a X3 owner! Ps. Not the greatest photographer so sorry for poor pictures… |

Cool car. Do you also have sport + and comfort or are they all like ECO settings? lol

Congratulation for your new car, it look very nice
You must be one of the firsts in Scandinavia to get the new 30e. I am also waiting my 30e but its still sailing on Atlantic and hopefully arrives as estimated in beginning of March. One specific question: would yo like to measure the "extra" elevation of the boot ...this has been bothering me a bit and there is no any exact info available in BMW web sites. A picture of the boot could be super, Jukka |

Lovely car - keep us posted on how the electric only goes, like how far you get around town on battery only etc...
If you could get a passenger to do a video with windows open and then cruise a little then boot it to hear the transition ... that would be awesome. We all ask so much of you sir, you pioneer you!!! But you did so much so far as above with pictures of boot. You're awesome, just one step more ;-) LOL - hope you enjoy that gorgeous vehicle. |

Thanks everybody! Lets see if I can answer some of questions already but will come back on more comments later as well.
“Suby01” – No, there is only a “super-eco” mode available. Haha. No the modes are the same as normal with comfort, eco, sport (and I think sport plus as well) and individual. “Fujing” & others. About Range – I’m not a “nerd” in this area as some people I know who drive hybrids and it is rather early to tell given I got the car yesterday and it is around +1-5celcius outside which takes down the range. I had a VW Passat GTE before with a official range figure of 50km by the old NEDC standard and this should do 46km by the new WLTP, which is much stricter. The Passat did in reasonably heavy stop and go traffic with not so economic driving, as I do not put much attention to that, around 30+km in the summer and 20+km in the winter as the heating killed quite a lot of the battery. I’ve now driven to work a couple of times and the gut feeling is that the range is somewhat longer and maybe you could multiply the passat range by around 1.25x. So I would hope this to be able to do some 35-40km in the summer going to work and maybe some 25-30km in the winter (Km is 0.62miles). With not so heavy traffic of course the range should be longer. However, I feel I’ve not fully learned the tricks with the battery, charging etc and it takes a bit time get a firm view on the range. So have to come back to that and the 1.25x you should take as a wild guess based on a gut feeling. One thing to keep in mind is that the heater which can be used to pre-heat the car in the winter is electric in the 30e(passat was petrol) which could impact the battery as well. “Pierreye” – Fuel tank 50litres if I’ve not mistaken. “asyvan” – Tack! “chx437” – I measured it and it seemed to be 7,5cm(around 3 inches) higher from the plastic in front. Seems that “Revenous666” already posted some photos, thanks for that. And Jukka; Se on tosi hieno auto, tulet olemaan tosi tyytyväinen! “Revenous666” – on “cons”. Yes, agree. I ordered the car 5 months ago and I had seen photos of the boot already some months ago so have got used to the idea so did not reflect on it. The bump I did not notice however before you pointed that out, so not a very large one though. The boot size is the same as the hybrid Q5 and GLC and I’m sure will be fine in 99,5% of times for my 4 person family with two kids. The larger boot you have the more you will pack, that is my experience. “mathys” – Yes. Exterior – Msport, Sophisto Grey with extended shadowline(black grill, exhaust tips), tinted rear windows, 699M wheels. Interior – Pearl Crome Rombicle trim, Black leather Vernasca “Dilbert2402” – there is enough space for the boot cover (and maybe the net) but not so much excess space beyond that. “spangle1980” -the electricity only driving is pretty good actually and the car feels surprisingly quick on max electric. I did 90 % of the driving with my previous car with electricity and based on first two days I will do the same with the X3 30e. And when it comes to transition between engines I think it is very seamless. Did test drive 330e and did not feel then it was as good. Strange as it is pretty much the same drivetrain. I did test the MB E 350de as well which was very good in in my view but I think this is even better than that. Last edited by NordicX3; 01-29-2020 at 04:07 PM.. |

Car looks fantastic in that colour combo with the wheels - look forward to hearing how it is to live with on a daily basis.
Congratulations!

Once you do a long road trip, I'd be interested to know the max range of the 30e - with tank full and battery 100%, how far can you go before you have to stop for gas?
With the M40i, driving normally at 70 mph, I can go 450 miles, give or take. Over 500 miles if I'm going 60-65 mph. |

Please correct me if I am wrong, but once you run out of electric mode are you not driving a vehicle with a 4-cyl 180hp gas engine that weights 600 pounds more than the stock x30i? I would expect performance to be significantly compromised. What am I missing?

I’ve driven a hybrid a bit more than 2.5 years now and rarely have encountered such situation that the battery runs out, especially after first 6 months of ownership. Maybe in the beginning it happened a couple of times but as many hybrids these days can be run that it also automatically leaves some battery(e.g. 20%), this would be even less likely. I did not have the option to leave battery level at certain percentage in my previous car but I managed just fine. But generally speaking at least I do two types of driving. 90-95% of my driving is to work or other close by driving in low speed city environment. This I do 100% electric if the distance is below say 30km(~20miles). Generally electric motors in hybrid cars are very good in city speeds. If there is a higher speed or longer distance, I drive in hybrid (petrol + electric) mode so I always have some battery left. And for the higher motorway speed longer journeys I normally use the same hybrid mode with the petrol engine as a “base” with electric motor kicking in for extra performance and slightly better fuel consumption vs normal petrol. In these cases I have never run out of battery in my 2.5years with my previous car. I’ve still not had my first longer journey with the X3 but would assume that I keep the behaviour the same as with my VW hybrid. I hope this answers a part of the question or gives another view at least. |

Generally, I rarely follow the petrol fuel consumption very closely as I do 90-95% of my driving electric, mainly to work and back. If I do not do longer trips I do no visit the petrol station more often than maybe once in 3months. For my driving a hybrid is perfect, and as I do longer trips maybe 2-3 times a year and as I have kids who want to stop every 2-3 hours the one tank distance is not that important for me. But I would assume that a “normal” petrol car would be better from that point of view. |
