Paint Peeling

So, after having my car detailed today I noticed that the edge of my spoiler looked odd as if the paint was flaking and peeling. After noticing this, I looked over the car and I also saw where the paint under the edges of the rear bumper have completely flaked and peeled off almost to the point to where it is starting to peel up the edge of the bumper. You can actually peel the paint back with your fingers and it comes off in pieces. I stopped by the dealer to show them and one of their X3Ms on the lot had the same spoiler issue as mine. My car is Donington Grey and the other one was Toronto Red. They did have another that was white that is not having the same issue, but it also has not been on the lot as long as the red one. My car only has 3500 miles on it, and I’ve had it since January. I’ll attach some photos. They want to send it to the body shop to have the spoiler repainted and also the lower rear bumper repainted and are going to set something up with me as soon as they confirm availability at the body shop. Any thoughts on this?

thanks

I Just noticed the bottom lip (?) of my front bumper is slightly peeling on Donington Grey X3MC. I keep it in a garage, drove it in the snow, but never had accumulation. I’ve never had an issue like this with BMW or any car (Mercedes, Volvo), particularly after ~6 months.

My car is usually garage kept, and I live in Georgia where we have had 0 snow. My car also isn’t on the highway much at all. Just normal commute on a 45 mph speed limit road. I switch between it and my Mercedes C43 AMG.

Any pictures to share of your paint peeling?

Yikes. This is not good at all. All plastic parts so wherever they are getting the plastic painted must not have done proper prepping of the surfaces.

I'll try to update tomorrow since the sun just set, but here...

If water hits it, the lip slightly bubbles in about a 5-6cm area

This looks like the same area as mine... Mine has just not made it up yet to make it this noticeable. Mine is on both the pass and driver side. I can upload more pics tomorrow.

Anyone else having the spoiler issue too??

I tried to use the search feature, but now I do see that. My other concern was the rear spoiler the way it’s peeling and starting to flake up. I’m starting to get a little upset with the whole thing because I just had my 2019 X5 40i M Sport they had to buyback and I replaced it with this X3M. The X5 had the brakes fail on me while driving, and it was only 9 months old at the time.

Attached are two more photos of my under bumper area that’s peeling. I can attach more photos of my spoiler also if anyone else wants to see more of what it’s doing for comparison.

On this topic, I have this haziness around the roundel in my hood (it looks like the paint is cloudy). Car is perfectly dialed in so not on the surface. Color is donington.

Did anyone take their car to the dealer and show the paint issues? What was the response?

I can't imagine there will be any issues getting these panels repainted as paint delamination as in these photos is a factory flaw. There are several stages for painting thermoplastic parts that typically will have traces of residual mold release that must be completely removed prior to paint and it's possible that poor cleaning stage or adhesive promoter application is the culprit for the photos posted in this thread. Do some investigating on the paint shop the dealer recommends to make sure they will properly remove the old finish prior to painting.

I have the same issue as well. The rear spoiler on mine has started to peel and flake off where it meets the glass, and on both corners of the spoiler. It is currently at the dealership getting the spoiler repainted under warranty. The service manager had to contact BMW for approval. Wednesday will make two weeks they have had the vehicle. I've also had issues with the bottom trim on the doors being misaligned, Driver side mirror had a visual defect, and Competition badge coming off tailgate. This is my first brand new BMW and I'm not to impressed to say the least.

That is really disappointing that BMW has not figured all this out by now.

I haven't seen any issues on mine but will take a closer look.

If I have to eventually get paint work done, I wonder will BMW cover the ceramic coating and PPF on the front?

Better pic from yesterday. You can see it slightly bubbled and flaking, when washing, water goes beneath and bubbles further. I am going to call the dealer tomorrow, but not sound like a complete idiot, what is the name of the part? Front bumper lip?

Edit. Close up is the second picture. I’m on my ipad, so I’m not sure if its displaying properly... just two photos, one far shot, one close up.

Best image I have. Didn't notice peeling anywhere else, but I'll do a more thorough check.

wow! That sucks. I have peeling on the lower rear bumper like others but nothing else.

I am sure the dealership will take care of it. I hope they match the paint.

Yikes. Does this seem more common ok on Donnington Grey? Or to early to tell?

I will have to keep an eye on mine. That front lip is bad

I hope so, didn't realize how bad it was until today. The photo makes it look worse than it is - I mean it's not good by any means, regardless water shouldn't pool beneath the lip's paint.

Ah crap, I'll check my donington grey x4m tomorrow. Mine's been garaged in Texas weather only. Sunny, dry, and hot. Maybe in rain once.
