Cold Weather Parking Sensor Issue

I am a new owner of a 2021 M40i and really enjoying it.

I did have one issue, we had a cold snap <10 F for a few days and during the cold my parking sensor were registering something at the back passenger’s side. Attached is a photo of the dash while I had the issues. I checked the sensors to make sure to make sure they were clean and couldn’t find anything on them.

Luckily when weather warmed up the issue went away but wanted to see if this was a known issue or this is something I need to get BMW to address. Any idea what could have caused this?

Condensation froze over the camera and it was seen as an obstruction. This happens to me when it snows up here in NY. The car goes crazy with these sensors in parking mode. It even engages at slow speeds in traffic. I simply press the parking button to disable.

Thanks wdeerfield

That is exactly what it seemed like was going on, I just wanted to make sure this wasn't something that needed to be addressed by BMW under warranty.

Exactly the same here in the Netherlands. When there is ice or snow, some sensors go haywire. Once I clean them or the weather gets better, it all works as intended.

Thanks, at least I am not the only one dealing with this. I did try to wipe the sensors clean but it didn't help, maybe I missed one.

In my opinion it’s one of the most annoying BMW issues. I am from MN where snow and ice are a reality 4 months of the year. Any freezing rain or heavy snow coming down drives the sensors nuts. To make matters worse there is no way to turn the sensors completely off. The round button does not fully turn the sensors off. They just keep triggering. I’ve tried everything. I doubt anyone’s found a way to get the warning chimes from going off once their sensors are covered but I’d love to hear from you if you’ve found a way to do it.

What we need is a button that activate heated sensors to melt accumulated snow and ice. Now that would be cool.

Agreed, since it's kind of a safety system I would have thought they would be required to keep it working correctly in all conditions.

It's not just a BMW thing, it's the nature of the ultrasonic technology. My wife's Volvo, a Mercedes, and even a neighbor's Buick have the same issues in the wintertime.
