Not sure how you're only getting 18.1, other than if you have the settings in sport or sport+. I have mine all in comfort for the highway trips, and I've gotten between 21.5 and 23.3 consistently. Sport settings reserved for off-highway roads.

Unless you're draining the tank to measure how much fuel was in the tank, calculating distance by gallons used is probably less accurate than going by the mpg average the car provides

Most of the freeway miles are done using cruise control on efficiency mode. Cruising at 80mph in 8th gear was about 2500rpm. Even looking at the instant reading, I didn't see a sustained mpg exceeding 22. By the time I reached Denver, my highway average was 19.7 but driving up and through the mountains killed that average. On the way back, I wasn't so interested in economy so I set the cruise control at 100mph through Nebraska with an occasional run up to 120.

But then again, I didn't buy this for fuel efficiency. I'm just surprised you average so high

Thanks all for the comments. I enjoy the car at times when I can, and enjoy just cruising on long trips. Low 20s isn't bad but I just traded an M550i xDrive that could do 30 MPG highway! Plus it had a bigger tank to allow a 500-550 mile range!

I simply divide the miles travelled by the amount of fuel/gallons I fill into the tank. Easy math.

I used to do that but its only accurate if you fill it to the same degree every time. I don't think the auto shutoff is consistent across stations/pumps/etc. Therefore I'd bet gallons used could be as much as .5 off.
