Question for everyone running BM3...

I'm about to take my car in soon for an oil change. I'm running BM Stage 3 with catless downpipes.

What steps do you guys take before taking it in. Should I flash everything back to stock before leaving the house?

I havn't flashed back to stock since getting the cat delete. I'm afraid there might be a check engine light because the o2 sensor was removed, but BM3 waves this error with the software.

Thanks in advance.

If it’s just an oil change and you are planning to pay for it anyways, I’d recommend to take it an independent shop you know/trust rather than taking it to a BMW dealer.
Once it’s at the dealer and it gets plugged in and ISTA is run your car very likely will be flagged for suspicious engine tune/modifications (DP or not). Otherwise you are at the mercy of the BMW dealer and hope it doesn’t get plugged into the diagnostic tool(s)

Don't bother...

The new ISTA software will flag a fault for "Suspected Engine Tuning" regardless if you flash back to stock or not. Tested it out on my 2019 MINI which has been flashed...this is what it will display:

Ok got it. So then never take it back to BMW every again? :-)

So what if you DO take it to BMW and they see "Suspected Tune" then what. They turn me down for service? I'm sure people tune their cars all the time wouldn't they be used to this sorta thing?

Funny, I never heard anything about this when before I purchased BM3, everyone said "just flash it back" like a piece of cake but apparently there is a lot more to it.

It's because this is a recent update within this year that BMW has started doing. Before, yes...you could flash back to stock and they wouldn't know (unless BMW wanted to dig deeper)

No they won't turn you down for service. It's just forever logged with BMW...

If your motor blows...they ain't covering it. If there is any engine issue that can be related to the fact the car was tuned, you're going to have to fight them to cover it.

It's definitely made me reconsider getting the X3M tuned. Messing with a $30k motor, while under a lease is a little too much risk for me. If the motor goes on my MINI...well that's a bit different, much smaller $ we are dealing with

Is this an issue with piggyback tunes like the burger tuning jb4 style tunes as well?

Thanks brother. Yeah I'm cool with it if I can still bring my car into the dealer. I mean we have a few Russian european shops but I only use them if I really need to (if you know what I mean). But yeah, if I blow the engine then that is my fault. But just for regular checkups it would be nice to take it to people that know exactly what their doing. Atmosphere, refreshments, coffee etc :-)

That's very interesting considering the point of piggyback tunes is to not change the ecu.

There's data collected on acceleration kept in the ECU. Too much performance recorded and you're flagged for "mods".

That's what I read on the internet ... take as many grains of salt as needed.

I don't understand what the problem is ...
Sooner or later it will be necessary to drive in BMW Service for some stupid issue and they will detect the tune .
Warranty bye bye .

If the problem is a legal and economic aspect it makes sense to use private companies but if it is only for a guarantee purpose as mentioned, sooner or later the problem will have to be addressed.

Having a warranty denied today is like having it next year .

ran into a visibly modded Mustang with a STEEDA label on the back. Had no idea what this thing was, it was definitely not a Shelby. Then he gave me thumbs up and took off like a TT Huracan. Turns out it was an 800+ hp "Steeda Q850 Streetfighter" - go figure...

$400 if you purchase my license, normally $595. Then all tune package is $100 (91-93-E30 stage 1 and 2)
