Screenwash / washers

OK, so I've had my M40i 5 months and have yet to be able to get more than s thimble full of screenwash into it !

I know there was a thread a while ago re this. It presumably had BMW Screenewash in it from new and I have only tried to add BMW screenwash as that is all I use.

It seems a stupid design.

Has anyone taken the plastic bits off to look ? Was it easy ?
I am assuming a BMW dealer will look if I arrange to pop it in as I am not dropping it off for a day for this !! I also wonder if BMW assist will come out to it as without screenwash it is 1) impossible to drive any distance in poor weather, and 2) Illegal anyway.

Anyone had the recurring same issue and how was it sorted ?

It is not the sort of issue I ever expected on a brand new car !

Garage List
Strange. When attempting to fill with screen wash, is the vehicle on flat and level ground?

Yup, never had an issue filling a BMW and always only use BMW screenwash. It just never takes any. I am off on a long drive tomorrow so will try ringing the BMW assist people to see if they can look before I go as I don't want to run out !

Funny you should say that - I know for sure I've been using mine, yet every time I try to fill it up it take FOR EVER.

Side note - icy day today in Manchester - I'm pissed that the squirty jets are not heated, note to self, don't dilute screen wash 50/50 from now :-/

OK, so I took it to the dealers and they say it's ok ... just takes an age to fill !
They agree it is a stupid design but thankfully the reservoir is apparently huge .

I filled my washer fluid up yesterday and didn't have any issues. I'm not sure how big the reservoir is but I added just under 5L before it was full to the brim. I didn't have any low washer warning - I was just filling proactively now that I'm using my spray more due to weather.

I used the attachment that came with my 5L screen wash. The attachment has an air pipe/hole so allows very fast flow. It probably took around 3mins to fill about 5L - I had to pause a few times to let the fluid go down into the reservoir.

I agree the reservoir takes an age to fill - my technique is slow and steady to let the displaced air come out. Takes a few mins but on the plus side it's a big tank and seems to last for ages.

Oh, and the jets ARE heated. The trace / heating wire runs along the total length of the feed tube and into each of the 3 jets.

On mine the fill pipe dipped down low before it connected to the reserviour so would air lock and take ages to fill. In the end I unclipped the plastic side panel from the window to the headlight to gain access to the fill tube and disconnected it and re lined it up without the low point. No more airlock and it fills ok although still not as quick as pouring it straight into a reerviour like the F11s.

No I didn't take any. It only takes 10 minutes, the side panel if held on with plastic rivets (theres two located inboard by the bulkhead so you have to remove the quick release cover under the windscreen as well). The cover just pulls forward and out you can then get access to the pipe, which itself is only a few seconds to turn around to get rid of the low point. The washer tray itself is only held on with a plastic rivet too so that can help with moving the pipe if you loosen that off.
