2013 X3 35i vs 2017 Disco Sport HSE - Huge discrepancy in fuel mileage

Just got back from a trip north to lake country, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours each way.

When i arrived at the destination i noted I had barely used a quarter of a tank, thought that was pretty good going with cruise set to 120kmh.

Brother in law arrives a second later with damn near 2/3rds tank gone, he likely drove a bit faster but still the discrepancy is huge considering the X3 is a tiny bit heavier, has a larger engine, had 300 vs 240 HP and an 8 vs 9 speed box.

Specs comparison below.

Return trip saw similar numbers, his disco is drinking like crazy for a 2 litre 4 banger.

Anyone else surprised at this?

Fuelly says the Discovery Sport HSE 2.0 is between 24.4-25.8mpg while the X3 3.5i is in 20.5mpg range.. quite the opposite. There must be something wrong with his car.

I think the fuel gauge on the X3 is wrong - you cannot get 42 mpg (or 5.6 liter/100 km) in an X3 35i unless you were driving downhill all the way.

At 120kph for 2.5 hours that's 300km or 186 miles. The gas tank is 17.7 gallons or 67 liters. One fourth of a tank is 4.5 gallons or 17 liters. That's about 41.5 mpg or 5.5 liter/100km

Nah the link I posted shows the highway mileage about 19% better for the X3. 7.7 L/100 vs 9.2 at 100KMH and likely more at 120.

It was 271km one way, on the way up there we hit a bit of traffic so were not sitting on 120 but this would result in higher consumption no?

On the way back i filled up for gas with 235km remaining and did it all in one hit, likely averaging 110kmh I would estimate (zero traffic and took just over 2 hours).

As i pulled in the needle was not QUITE touching the 3/4 full mark.
