Yep that is almost exactly what it sounds like... I'd trailer it to a dealer and have them fix it before it is completely kaput.
It will be best to fix it because not many people have a desire to buy an X3 let alone one with an engine that is soon to stop functioning.

Maybe but you would definitely get screwed because it would not pass a dealer inspection

Why not get a new turbo and get the timing chain and guides replaced? Let's be real, BMW is at fault for manufacturing a crappy car, but if money is an issue you should not have even thought about buying a BMW.

Just been chatting to these guys...advice was to drive in sport mode and sacrifice some fuel economy. This will add thousands of miles to the longevity of the affected parts.

I don't really think it's worth the money to fix a 6 years old car.

I already spend $2800 replacing valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket. Performing timing chain repair and turbo replacement would most likely put total repair cost about $7000. By the time when I'm selling this car the most I'll get is $9000 if I'm lucky, that would be a dumb financial decision if I repaired it for $7000 and sell it for $9000.

It was having drive train malfunction when over 40 mph but car still drives fine, dealer diagnose it to be a valve cover gasket leak they said oil filter housing is leaking badly and suggest me to replace the gasket, I haven't see any leaks around the oil filter housing yet.
