Winter Tires

Hi All,

I'll be moving to Denver soon and I was thinking of getting the Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires for the winter and keeping my PS4S for the warmer weather until they wear out. Anyone know anything about the Pilot Sport All Season tires? Seems like they are brand new tires. Anyone have any other winter tire recommendations for X3M comp? Do people usually go with a square setup in the winter and get new rims/tires? I haven't had to get winter tires before so any inputs would be greatly appreciated.

Do you plan to drive in the snow or is an option to skip? For example can you opt to stay home and work from home and you don’t plan to ski. If so an all season is probably fine. If it’s the opposite and you want to drive in the snow and plan to ski I would for sure get a dedicated winter tire. They are hands down better for snow and ice.

I am in Denver metro area and I will to be mounting a dedicated winter setup 255/45/20. Nokian Hakkapellita R3s. Only other option discount has was the pirellis. The R3s will be better in snow and ice and softer in all other conditions and the scorpion snows will be stiffer more like an all season and have less capability (but still better than all seasons) in heavy snow and ice.

I personally like to drive like a boss through snow storms and frequently drive up to the mountains. So I will sacrifice a squishier ride on the day to day. I ran the Nokians on my SRT jeep for 4 years and never had issues with the handling. Just have to recognize your not on your summer 21s and brake earlier and not take corners quite as aggressive.

I put these on a little while ago (in OEM X3MC size). I am going to use these year round (I live in Massachusetts but I run dedicated winter tires on two of my other vehicles). So far, the tires are impressive for an all season tire. The biggest difference is that they ride noticeably better than the Contis my X3MC came with. Not any quieter (slightly disappointing) but they do much better in the wet. Obviously, I cannot speak to any snow conditions yet. In dry and wet conditions, these will likely do better than dedicated winter tires unless it got really cold.

Being from Denver also, I’m going with all seasons this year. I don’t plan on going to the mountains enough and honestly the roads here get cleared quick. Between the trucks and the sun, snow doesn’t stick long enough for me to justify “snow” tires

If you're going to change tires anyway, why not go with a dedicated winter tire?

+1 and another vote for Nokian Hakkapellita R3s. These tire are best described as softer-than-expected so the handling will change. Otherwise, these winter tires would be one of the top choices if traction in any conditions is a must.

So what winter tires would people recommend to maintain the fun factor of the car while still being able to handle a decent amount of snow? I live in Mass and the past couple of years we have gotten some pretty random heavy snow but in between the storms it's not that bad. Looking for tires that handle extreme conditions well but still allow me to enjoy the ride to work.

Many, including myself, have gone with the Pirelli Scorpions. They handle surprisingly well for a winter tire (assuming you use the higher pressure as recommended for >100 MPH driving in the manual.

When pushing them to their max they do have limits (over 90 and driving aggressively) but they are good for winters.

Check out my threads below:

Edited to add: Considering the lack of snow we have in my area over the past 10 years, if all seasons were out at the time I may have gone that route.

Good points. I forgot about the speed rating difference. If that’s important to people in the winter. The Nokians are rated I believe to 118mph and the scorpions have a higher speed rating I believe near 140mph.

I think the Nokians are for real snow driving. Like if you live in an area where there is packed snow for several weeks/months.

The Scorpions are the type of tire that will allow you go go in any condition, but I would not say they are the best performing winter tire I have ever used.

That honor falls to the GISLAVED NORDFROST 5 which I had studded on my 80's Chevy Spectrum .

The thing was like a tank with these tires. Ice/snow didn't matter. I was passing 4x4s up icy hills like it was nothing.

I have found with any tire, the better it does in one condition, the worse it does in others.

I drive fast in the winter so speed rating would be a consideration of mine. Just cause it's cold doesn't mean it's snowing!

+1 on the Pirelli Scorpions. They were the only ones available from the Tire Rack when we picked up our X3MC last November. For you MA guys, I ended up ordering them locally at Town Fair (price matched) and had them mounted on the stock wheels. The stock summer Conti's were no good below 40 degrees.

I found my stock conti's started to lose grip at anything lower than 50 degrees.

I installed those in 225/60/R18 (runflats)on my previously owned X3 M40i and was happy with the handling and ride at highway speeds here in Missouri. Also drove in a couple of snowfall events before the roads were cleared and no problems with traction. Its pretty hilly here in rural Missouri and it gets really cold (think polar vortex) no traction problems at all.
I looked around for a winter set, for the X3MC, and ended up with the following from TireRack. Vredestein 255/45/20VR Wintertrac Pro's on 20X9 Asanti Black Label wheels.

Discount had them in the system but they were not available. The Michelin Alpin tires are great. I had the PA4 on a sedan and they were hands down the best all around snow Tire I have owned and I’ve had most of the major players.

I'd be curious to hear the reviews on this tire as I'm a fan of Michelins.

When I purchased (Dec 2019) the Pirelli's were the best out of the limited options.

I'm in the process of getting the pirelli scorpions. Contemplated the all season Michelins but I've heard the road noise hasn't improved over the a/s 3+ which bothered me personally

I'm going with the Michelin Sport AS so I'll have a set of Conti's for return or Michelin's to sell. I'll know next week at pickup which Tire I got!

I'll probably be buying from Discount so will check with them. I've had several sets of PA4 on different cars and agree they are excellent. I had Scorpion Winter on both B8.5 and B9 SQ5 before my X3M and have sottozero 3 on our M340i xDrive. I've liked all of these and view them as pretty equal but would probably try the PA5 SUV if it's available.

Amateurish Question

I've leased 2020 X3 for 36 months with M Sports package with Tire & Rim Protection.
Current tire dimensions are (Performance Summer Tires)
275/40/R20
245/45/R20

I've following questions and truly appreciate if someone can help me to take right decision -

1. Is there any harm in putting all 4 tires with 245/45/R20 winter tires on existing rims?

2. I have a deal where someone on Facebook marketplace is selling 245/40/R19 with BMW rims and 70% thread on Pirelli X-Ice for 50% lesser than market price - Can I take them and get them installed on my new X3?

3. Since I have tire & rim package, I have to take BMW approved tires to claim if something happens to those tires (as told by the salesperson). What are those tires which are BMW approved?

We won't be driving too much into snow this year. But again, I want to make sure that even if we need to, we have winter/snow tires ON to avoid any risk.
Also, we don't want to spend exhobirent price on new tires and rims as our travel is very less compared to summer driving.

Kindly advise, please.
