2022 X3 - to xdrive or not to xdrive

...that is the question.

I'm new to Florida and in the NE it was a no brainer : xdrive all the way.

xdrive is not just for snow, it's also for rain...It rains in SE Florida a lot.

I've been getting mixed feedback. Some say yes to Xdrive and others say no as BMW nanny controls can help fix any problems.

whats the consensus here say?

4 wheel drive changes the handling characteristics of any vehicle when compared to 2 wheel drive, particularly during cornering. 4 wheel drive also accelerates faster off the line. Some people prefer rear wheel drive for a more traditional sports car feel (it lets you get the back end out easier, etc.). Although it doesn't snow in FL, there are other reasons you might want 4 wheel drive. Are you ever going to tow anything? Are you ever going to be off road, even if it's just a gravel or dirt road? If you're sure you'll never "need" 4 wheel drive, then it's really a matter of personal preference.

Honestly I think the biggest reason to add XDrive is to better equip the car overall. Meaning that just like with the XDrive 30i, you are no longer able to add many of the semiconductor chip dependent features (HK, auto cruise, park assist, etc) to the RWD X3 (sDrive). If those features aren't a priority I think it's personal preference. Personally, if those options aren't available when I buy again I'll jump up to and X3 M40i or X5.

Good luck...

The lack of option choices equally applies to xdrive version of 2022 30i right now. I have not been able to add parking assistance or adaptive cruise to my build order. Nor do I see any units shipping to dealers around me that have those options. Totally bummed but I don't want to cancel my order. Beggars for a new ride cannot be choosers. Focusing on the many other good features. Breath.

hey all. ty. i should have specified. this is a 3 year lease (not worried about resale), its for my wife who is not concerned about sporty driving. it will be driven on roads only, on trips... performance is not an issue. i am thinking for safety.

the key question is xdrive appreciably more safe than non xdrive?

Xdrive for rain or mud. Better traction is always a good thing.

I live in FL and we just ordered an sDrive X3 for my wife (also leased). I used to be a big AWD Fanboy (owned several Subarus), but didn't feel the need for AWD this time around.

AWD is helpful in the rain but as long as you aren't driving crazy in bad weather it shouldn't be a big difference. BMW traction control and stability control will keep the rear driven wheels from spinning out of control. In a state with snow/ice and actual hills/curves I would be more concerned about having it.

There is obviously a performance driving benefit as well, but your wife sounds like mine and wouldn't notice the difference. If it was a 40i obviously it would be more important, but not like those are available without xDrive anyway.

Also for the people who mention its a SAV/SUV... let's be real, nobody is going through tough off road terrain in a brand new X3. It's basically a big hatchback not a truck or jeep.

XDrive. Rains like crazy in south Florida. And considering the crazies in trucks going 80 I torrential downpours, I’d rather have AWD. YMMV.

sDrive. I have had several X5s, X6, and an X3 in south FL. Some xDrive, some sDrive.

You don't need the xDrive for anything. My current X5 is sDrive.

You don't need xDrive for the rain either. The nannies are very good.

I haven't noticed a difference to be frank.

But! Resale value is better for the xDrive. Ok the flip side, you pay for all or some of that at time of purchase.

Ok if this is for your wife take xdrive, remember when temp drop and yes it is possible on xdrive got better grip, my friend took x5 rwd for his wife and he say that was mistake, that's my opinion

A long time ago my wife once spun an E46 320d company car around 3 times on a highway onramp in the rain, incredibly without hitting anything. That was the only incident in many years of driving RWD cars. Nannies have evolved a lot since then, I would have no issue buying an RWD in a state without regular winter ice and snow today.
