The n54 had issues with everything. It was BMW’s first attempt at the di turbo platform. They have ironed those all out now. Nevertheless the e90/92 335 and m3 both were outstanding cars and were still the benchmark for the time.

I think we are conflating reliability with driving characteristics lol. Today’s turbo bmw’s are much more reliable but are a totally different driving experience.

They have ironed the issues out in engines that didn't exist in the E platform lol... the N55 was the lasts bmw motor in the E series and while it was far better than the N54 from a reliability perspective, it was no longer as fun nor as tunable as the N54 and still didn't have perfect reliability. It would be insane to choose either of those motors for any reason vs the B58.

I think what a lot of people are saying is that while the E had good driving characteristics it had a ton of shortcomings that often overrode the benefits of the cars feel... and I think that's why u almost never see an E series bmw anymore... i cant remember the last time i saw a 335i that wasn't in a junkyard.

You don’t see the 335s because they usually have a cloud of blue smoke behind them.

Once again we’re focusing on the turbo engines. If I could, I would rather own a NA engine any day. The 328 was much more reliable, not without issues, but pretty solid. I happen to know my 07 E92 is still on the road and the owner is very happy with the car.

I don’t know how confident I’m going to feel owning my G01 in 13 years with all these electronics like I was with the E92.

I guess that’s one upside to modifying way past your warranty.

not me, under any circumstance... even if i were to take hit in reliability, i'd still get modern turbo...

Nothing NA less than a large V8 would offer the torque i'd want in a vehicle... and i am ok w not getting 12 mpg lol.

Haha, too true. Loved how the steering/chassis felt carving through corners tho.

<edit: Apologies for continuing the thread jack>
I'm really hoping that I have the same good fortune with my X3 as I have had with my e90. Still own my '09 335i x-Drive. Still lots of fun to drive (when I get the chance), and zero blue smoke during its lifetime. Carbon build-up? Yep, awhile back - walnut shell blasting addressed that. My son has it now, and it's his daily. Still pulls like a train, too. Best car I've ever owned - to this point (hoping my new X3 eclipses that mark) - and only other vehicle I've custom ordered. YMM(definitely)V - but I am apparently very fortunate in this regard.

P.S. The Harmon-Kardon in my e90 is also top shelf. My son replaced the amp on his own dime after blowing it.

Cheers~
