When I get time, I am going to submit this to the NHTSA.

Since backup cameras are now required by regulation, making them too dark to see is a safety issue.

On the other threads, BMW was aware of the issue and is doing nothing but blaming it on tinted windows....despite it affects people without tint and is a common and legal mod in several states.

The issue arose when BMW changed the software of the brightness control from "Brightness" to "Brightness at night". Coupled with a poorly placed and oversensitive light sensor on the cluster of all places.

Came across this issue today after getting tints a few days ago
Bright sunny day and everything is dim, I can barely see the AC controls. Add it to the list....

I have 30% tint on front and occasionally notice dash is dimmed inappropriately. It is a very very minor annoyance IMO.

1- start bimmercode app and connect and select BMW for car
2- select BMW X3/X3M (or X4/X4M)
3- select Headunit
4- select Expert Mode at top
5- select 3005 DISPLAY_PIP_CONFIG
6- scroll WAY down and select DIM_VARIANT (or search)
7- change setting from NEW to OLD
8- click OK.
9- Then backup on screens to the HEADUnit ECU screen.
10- select CODE at top right. Accept risk and let it do its thing.

It will wipe out the 8 hot keys so you will need to remember what you set them to. This will enable the Brightness control to be used during Daytime. It will now say Brightness versus Brightness during Nighttime. If the dealer ever does a ECU flash you will have to redo this,
Do you know if this is going to work on ID7, 2022 X3 M40i?

Dash cluster dimming was not a huge problem for me. It was the main display especially when backing up and being unable to see the backup camera. I still look behind me but you never know what is out of your field of vision and a good image on the backup camera can be the difference between hitting a kid/pet or not who happen to run behind you.

That is not minor IMO.

Not sure - search other forums to see if anyone with ID7 has tried.

I suspect if it is the same values it would work the same but have no evidence to back that.

Interesting as I seem to recall others with ID7 having the issue; could be mistaken though.

Are there other options for brightness in your settings or did they move the sensor? Made it less sensitive?

It was very easy to replicate on my 2020 ID6. I just had to shine a flash light (even the one on my phone) on the photo sensor and it brightened up the cluster and HVAC backlights immediately.

I'm still happy my control screen is fixed via the coding I posted previously as that was a huge issue for me. I can live with the minor annoyance of not being able to easily see how fast I am going in the cluster

Just thought I'd chime in here.

'22 X3 M40i with XPEL Prime XR Plus on the windshield and all windows. Windshield 70% and the rest is 15%. Definite dimming just like with my G20. The cluster has a light sensor in the same spot as the G20 (far left edge). My phone light is enough to make the display go back up to full brightness. Not sure if its just the Florida sun but my cluster is darrrrkkk. Looking at coding it looks like the default minimum brightness for the display is 3% and it's near that during the day for me.

I'll be trying what they found in this thread/post on G05 forums. Seems to help with both screens. Someone suggested using 5F instead of 3F for DIM_DTN (day/night threshold) which helps with dawn/dusk before the changeover to day/night brightness.

Please post back with results. I wouldn’t mind the cluster fixed as well and am ok with full bright at night

Luckily, the gist of the change is that the ambient light sensor is only used for the day/night switchover and the scroll wheel near the headlight switch will still control night time brightness. Both screens should be near full brightness on bright days.

I thought the headlights determined day/night?

In any case, let us know what you find out.

Also, would this impact the use of the dimvariant? Or should that have the same updated Bimmercode setting?

That's what you'd think with DIM_TAG_NACHT_LICHT_EIN_ENABLE being set to 1, but this post says otherwise. I will keep you posted.

Well I will know soon enough, LCI getting 35% prime XR plus on the front side windows and 70% on the windshield. Will report back next week if I messed up the car.
