Roof rails look cool enough. I wouldn't sweat it.

My X3MC has moved to the "awaiting carrier assignment" stage, so that means.. a few days and it'll be at the dealer, yeah?

Hey Max,
This Shadowline black trim that BMW is using on the body panels, are these black painted pieces or just black "gloss" plastic? From the looks of it they are going to be super prone to hairline scratching, but maybe the material is not the same as what I am thinking it is?

I actually thought they were painted, V8MAN . I just did an online search with terms 'BMW black shadowline trim - is it painted?', and a fair number of links appear in which discussions are held about what exact paint color it is, 'Black Chrome' vs 'Gloss Black'.

When my wife's front tow bar cover disappeared and had to be replaced, the Dealership ordered the part which came primed, then they had to match it to the rest of the trim on the car at the Body shop. I had previously thought it was just a black plastic piece. Seemed like an awful lot of work/effort for that one little item.

Suspect r33_RGSport and IND-Distribution could confirm as they've got extensive experience with BMW. And to be honest, we've never had much of a problem with scratching on the exterior black trim (or the interior for that matter). YMMV

I actually believe it's a combination of both, depending on where on the car.

But a lot of it is the cheap gloss plastic

And yes ppf would help

Shadowline is up to BMW whether they want to make black chrome or gloss black.

Black Chrome is a chrome dipping process.
While gloss black is paint. Some of the plastic parts are come prepainted from factory in gloss black, some are just primed.

I got a case where I purchased G05 X5 shadowline exhaust tips surround, when I received them, they were 2 different tone of gloss black. One is gloss black, the other one is black chrome.
Got it exchanged 2 times before I finally able to find the match.

Oh, the painted shadowline, I stop caring, it get swirls so easily. Hence I just lease, I won't be able to stand it if I have to keep the car.
