Dinan Stage 1

I see where Dinan has a Stage 1 for B58's now. If you send them your DME to flash, it only costs $499.

Before I ask them for instructions, how does one remove the DME and is it difficult? I can turn a screwdriver with some success but that is it.

It's right in the engine bay. Disconnect battery and remove connectors and remove it.

Interesting. Seems like I could do it. $499 seems like a great deal. I'm thinking it will be a lot more when Dinan dealers can do it locally.

If I understand what Dinan said on their website, the $499 cost is temporary and won't last long but is for customers who mail in their DME. Once the dealers are able to install the tunes in the next 30-60 days, the price will go to $699 (no warranty) and the $499 option will go away.

I'm OK with the $699 and letting them do it, but why would the warranty go away? They have a warranty on everything.

For the warranty coverage, this is the option, same thing but with added cost for the DINAN warranty,

Seems like DINAN has (slight) edge over Carbahn, if one's concerned about getting flash tunes from these companies for the warranty sake.

This is what i got from Carbahn dealer, claimed also with 93 octane,

Sorry if I was misleading. The flash tune with the warranty option is $1,399. I was only referring to the non-warranty options.

Seeing as how Dinan now runs Carbahn, does anyone know what the difference would be between the two?

I did a similar thing on my Focus RS back in 2011, I took the car to the shop, they took out the ECU opened it up and performed Surgery on one of the chips to basically unlock it so you could apply updates. As the Focus RS was basically a tuned Volvo engine a guy in Sweden had created a tune box that you plugged in the ODB2 Connector, you got 2 tunes out of the box, one was standard re-flash which you could do prior to taking the car back in for service, second was the tune which you could re-apply should you take it into the dealers and they overwrite your firmware. I would be asking how they apply the update/tune and can it be overwritten if the car is taken in for a service and a major ECU update is done. Of course this will invalidate any BMW warranty!!!.

Not much difference on the outputs from each tunes.

Number wise, the Dinan edges little better. And little cheaper.

I'm told (by both reps) that each are their "own" respective tunes. Take that for what it's worth though.

And apparently Carbahn "may" allow dealer to do the bench unlocking with the jig and the pin approach, rather than more common backdating of the bootloader. Doing this bench unlocking right from the dealer should save sending back and forth the DME with Carbahn.

Both have factory matching warranty for purchase.

Dinan tune does have timing for race gas, but if you are getting Dinan+ tune (to save your factory warranty) then i'm told race gas timing is taken out from the Dinan+ tune.

What's the difference between the Dinan+ vs Stage 1? Is it just the warranty?

Yes. And Dinan+ removes 100 octane (race gas) timing support. So, just 91 and 93 octane gas's benefits from Dinan+ tune.

I've asked Dinan for confirmation on 93 octane, but from their descriptions the Dinan+ benefits from "both" 91 and 93. NC has 93.

Update: I just called Dinan and the answer is negatory at this time.
