Double slats, dual slats kidney grille's, yes, one of those, show yours

Anyone has OEM double slats kidney grille's with active shutters?

Been searching through the forum, and i think i've got'em all as far as from those users that have showed theirs.

The car has active shutters, and found that the OEM double slats (yes, the ones from x3m/x3mc) "may have" issues with fitment in that may cause the active shutters to not close all the way. Fitment wise should be no issue. Air flow wise from having double slats ought to be no issue too.

And i'm assuming the OEM double slats grille's, i can REMOVE THE POSER BADGE from the slats.

Initial plan was to go with x3m double slats grille's then found out the darn thing has CHROME around it. Game over...

The x3mc is all black. Okay, better. I plan to replace cerium grey outside mirror caps with black down the road. Probably next the front cerium grey boomerang's and later the side whatchamacallit trims.

I would have preferred the cerium grey around the edge, with black slats even if a non-double slats. Found that the x3 30i has that design BUT AGAIN CHROME !!!

If the oem dual slats kidney grille's won't interfere with the active shutters behind the grille's, then i'll go with that, and not have to trim any piece from it to not cause issues with active shutters.

Looks like folks with double slats have the non-OEM, perhaps non-OEM will fit better option if the OEM interferes with active shutters opening and closing.

Just a guess here.. If fitment is not an issue, why should active shutters be? You think BMW made a different one for X3M/X3MC? Maybe realoem website can help with that (same part number means same part, right). I remember this question was answered by someone, with a result that everything works fine.

Yes, i reasoned through this similar way, then found this (scary) post,

I get to do some R&D testing, and my response is accurate as of Aug ‘19.

First-hand experience/knowledge: if the vehicle is equipped with Active Kindney Grilles, double-kidney ///M grilled or knock-offs of the same kind will not work.
1. G01/02 grilles are interchangeable with X3M/X4M grilles.
2. If you don’t have AKG on your vehicle, you are good to go.
3. If you do have AKG, we ran into the issue of the double-kidney grille not securing at the upper-outer corners. Take into consideration that the double-kidney grilles have a different design and backside clearance. With the AKGs open, the ///M grilles fit, no problem. Once they close with DKGs installed, the grill is forced from the corner tabs; or you will get an error that the AKG have not fully closed and you’ll hear the AKG motor and flaps clicking and grinding trying to close. F97/98s or any ///M car, for that matter, doesnt have AKGs.
4. The backside of the ///M version can be modified or shaved down to create the clearance.

As far as removing the ///M interior DKG piece from its outer trim, that will work the same way depending on whether AKGs are equipped or not. To my knowledge, only BMW Group, GmbH, and Autotecknic (excluding eBay or amazon replicas) make versions that fit the matching model. I’m sure by now that there are more options or even newer designs that account for the AKGs needing to fully close.

Maybe that will help anyone trying to swap, regardless of model.

I have non-oem double slats without the badging on my 19 m40i and have had no problems with opening or closing. Very easy to replace the cerium grey with these.

Thanks for that!

I was on the call with IND rep, and one thing that was made clear to me was, the OEM version even with the POSER BADGE removed that will apparently leave a rectangular left over piece that will (probably) look out of place...

Yours look great!

I was just in Charlotte few weeks ago...

That is the great thing about this version - no rectangle.

Nice - Where did you get them from and were they easy to fit? We have just picked our 2020 X3 up on Tuesday and the chrome grills are horrendous!

Bought them on ebay for £89.00. Just checked there and they are £59.99 so bargain!

Yeah absolute doddle to fit took me maybe 10 minutes max. Do a quick youtube search on how to change them before you start. Made things 100x easier.

Ps. would also have a look at the Maxton Splitter at the bottom of mines, personally makes the car look so much better!

Did you paint those bars red behind the grille? I was thinking of painting mines but looks like I would need to remove a lot of parts to gain access to them?

I vinyl wrapped them after removing the shutters. I would not have been able to get to the brace without doing so.

Hi there,

I ordered a set of those double slat grilles you have, and they arrived today, before I attempt to take the others off, I offered up one of the new ones to see how they align, and it looks to me like the gap between the double slat (the bit that is solid on the standard fit m40i grille) exposes the opening between the active flaps.

Basically, with the standard grille, the thick vertical bars hide the active grille hinges and small gap between the flaps, whereas with this double slat grille, it looks like those hinges and small gaps will be visible between through the double slat. Is that the case?

Do you have any close up images of the active flaps behind the new double slat grille?

Thanks for those, they are certainly helpful. What I meant was the small gap between each pair of double slats seems to lineup with the hinges of the active flaps, making the mechanism and/or small gap between way active vent shutter visible through the gap, whereas because the standard grill effectively has a thicker vertical slat where each double slat would be, it covers the gap between the active bent shutters and/or the mechanism.

I'll just have to fit them and see what they look like because yours actually look alright, and I really like the double slat finish on the grill.

Is your front lip one piece on the top and the middle structure is a separate piece?

Was looking at getting that front lip but without installing that bottom piece.
