According to some online articles, the X3M was supposed to get IDrive7 starting in April. Of course, we all know things got delayed.

It will be an interesting summer to see what updates these cars get. Since the X3 does not have OTA update ability, I wonder if it can still be user updated by USB?

Edit: Maybe the BMW Software Update site is wrong, but I enter in the VIN for my X3 and it states the software will update automatically.

From BMW ConnectedDrive:

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Your vehicle's compatibility for the Remote Software Upgrade depends on the hardware installed in your vehicle. A prerequisite is the Live Cockpit Professional navigation system.

The following models currently feature the Remote Software Upgrade: 1 Series, 2 Series Grand Coupe, 3 Series, 3 Series Hybrid, 3 Series Sports Wagon, 7 Series, 8 Series Convertible, 8 Series Coupe, 8 Series (M) Gran Coupe, M8, X5 (M), X6 (M), X7, Z4.

Alternatively, you can conduct the following test to check whether your vehicle is compatible for the Remote Software Upgrade:

"CAR"
"Settings"
"General settings"
"Remote Software Upgrade"
If "Remote Software Upgrade" does not display, the vehicle is not capable of Remote Software Upgrade.

If "Remote Software Upgrade" is displayed, you can also display information about the version.

"CAR"
"Settings"
"General settings"
"Remote Software Upgrade"
"Installed version."

The Remote Software Upgrade has been installed ex works; due to hardware restrictions, the upgrade cannot be purchased at a later date. If your vehicle is not compatible, you can ask your dealer at any time to install the most up-to-date software in your vehicle.

G01/G02 Architecture is not set up for this feature , i dont feel any type coding will enable it . I know M340 has it and so do other 2019+. Expect the next update/Gen to have it 100%

And it has been officially made official that pretty much Every Single BMW model EXCEPT the X3 will have the option for a Digital Key with an iPhone. Pretty disappointing is a understatement.

Why wouldn't BMW put this feature on the #1 selling model vehicle in their fleet??

I'd guess that they'll add it to the LCI in a year and didn't want to bother with a bit of new hardware now. They didn't add it to the 7 either which will have a new chassis in a year.

Not happy with this at all.

I just collected an x4 M40i and specifically spent more £ than I was going to to get idrive7 and live cockpit display thinking that automatically gave me remote updates ready for Android Auto etc.

The BMW dealer knew my concerns and never once informed me this feature wouldn't be present.

I upped my budget to get the 2020 model but I'm starting to think I should have saved £thousands and bought a lightly used 2019 model. In the UK we didn't get the engine performance increase anyway so all I have to show for the extra outlay is a half arsed version of ID7 and a playstation style live cockpit which imho is pretty cheap looking.

Is a visit to the dealer the only option for software updates or can I do it via phone or laptop?

The necessary hardware will be added in the LCI ( as what just happened with the 5 series). The x3 is one of the last to get it as it's one of the "oldest" , with the LCI coming in 12 months time. I was actually surprised they put in idrive7 last year into the x3 and 5 series, instead of holding off to LCI for this reason - there's a large thread in the 5 series forum on this same thing - current implementation is half baked as things like the body domain controller weren't updated at the same time

I'd rather have a 90% iD7 than none at all. With that said, I think that there was a lot of confusion, and probably misinformation from BMW, about OTA iD updates. I'm almost positive that OTA was marketed for MY20 X3s only to later prove to be non-existent.

Here's a couple of screen shots exemplifying how BMW has taken both sides on the X3/4 OTA update question. The first is from the site to check for software updates. It shows my car as a 2019, even though it's a 2020 and says that software will be updated automatically. The second is from the BMW Connected site. It says remote software updates are not available for my vehicle. WTF BMW?

Same here (and I'm UK based) however as far as I know, the only OTA updates that the MY20 X3's can accomodate is for map updates, and even then, it is only the local country map that gets the OTA update (in my cast the UK), if you want all of Europe, you still have to used the Connected Drive Portal and download it(via BMW Download Manager) to a USB and then do the update in the vehicle.

Can the X3 even do an OTA update? It doesn't have the same remote update option in BMW Connected that my Z4 has.

Rob
Reaching out to BMW in March they advised the earlier versions of ID7 in the X3 didn't have OTA which is weird since when I plug my VIN into their update site it says it will update automatically OTA.

They did leave it open ended though that the cars would get Android Auto.

I have both Android (personal) and Apple (work) devices and could never get used to IOS. Kinda like AOL for phones.

Here's to hoping they offer it as a free or paid update.

OTA is a convenience, but not a necessity I think. As long as there is a way to update ID7 (by usb?) then I'm ok with that.

Have a butchers at this, this may answer your question & it seems the X3 misses out on the Digital Key for now

Sorry I had to revive a thread from 2 years ago! I seem to be in the same situation after buying a new BMW X3 Xdrive 20d in Sept 2021 which came without wireless charging, keyless entry and ofcourse digital car key which BMW and apple launched few years ago!
Unfortunately, the Kia I had before had most of these features on my 2016 model and recently added digital Carkey too!

Is there a way to retrofit digital car key at an additional cost?

Just picked up my 2022 X3 30 and it has keyless entry and comfort access. No wireless charging. Gotta check on the Digital Key thing.

It’s funny I started reading this thread and didn’t realize it was two years old. All the features and functionality are in my 2022 X3.

I believe it was deleted when I chose the remote start option. Which I found weird as one has nothing to do with the other. I actually take delivery tomorrow so I will confirm or ask my rep.

Correct.

No G01/02 has Digital Key due to the deletion.

Only one that is equipped with the Digital Key and not deleted is the iX3
