It's ridiculous. Drove in Sport and Sport + for about 10 mins yesterday and what do I see after I park and look at the exhaust? Small piece of the left inner has come off.
Talked to my salesman at the dealership about it and he said "just don't drive in Sport mode". LoL! We talked a little more, and reading between the lines, there doesn't seem to be a fix from BMW right now. I don't see the point in getting it replaced and having the same issue in a month or so. I will ask my dealership if they can at least report it to the mothership, maybe that has more weight than it coming from me. Hopefully they will solve the problem down the road so I can get it swapped out for a non-flaking exhaust before my warranty ends. |

It’s a supplier defect in the process of the tips. They will replace the exhaust since tips are not changeable. Not all tips are like this so it could be that only one tip flakes inside and not the other. See your dealer.

BMW is aware of it are have already made corrections. The problem is in the mfg of the tips. So at point of install the problem has been fixed but there are still exhaust systems in the inventory that the dealer uses that hasn’t been confirmed ok or not ok. The dealer should replace your exhaust for this issue. Not all tips have this problem. It was a process issue with the tip supplier and it’s sorta random but frequent. Sadly you could get another exhaust with same issue until inventoy is confirms.

My dealer first said they would paint the tips for me but then changed their minds because they weren't sure they could do a job they could stand for. Also, the tips will just keep on flaking anyway. I said I didn't want a replacement since the same thing would just end up happening anyway. Will change my mind if it's true that they have some that don't have this problem

I don't have this issue yet but I'm checking regularly. Just out of curiosity, for those of you who have the flaking issues, are you driving in sport or sport+ most of the time?

Geez...5 mins with either some high heat tremclad or bbq paint and you're done! Whether or not dealer will replace it's just not worth your valuable time.
5 mins in the garage and done & dusted. Dealer = at least 2 days

17,000 miles on our 2018 M40i and the left one has a lot missing...and the right one has zero missing. I drive it in Sport all the time, wife in Comfort. I doubt I will do anything about it. Maybe throw some black Sharpie on it.

From what I've read, whether the exhaust tip got replaced (plus muffler since it's one single unit) really depends on the dealer. Many got them exchanged at least once, but a few dealers refused to do anything.
For those whom had the tips replaced, many also reported the issue came back after a short while. I guess the replacement part used in those cases were either belonging to the same batch of parts, or just as bad in paint quality as the original. So I'm taking the approach of observing this for now, and mention this to my dealer when the first oil change is due in another 6 months. So hopefully, new/better parts are available by then. |

Same, I'm in sport all the time and my SO is comfort. LEft exhaust is almost completely bare while the right looks new. Dealer agreed to replace, but I'm not bringing it in for service until I know there's a permanent fix.

Sport mode might open the left exhaust a bit sooner after the engine starts up, and keep it open during the drive. However, I have not read anything about the M40i keeping the left exhaust closed during normal driving in Comfort or EcoPro. |

Mine ended up flaking on both sides. That BBQ paint did the trick though. Good as new, can't tell one bit they both flaked. I'll just keep touching it up over time. So many other serious issues could arise these days with newer vehicles, I'm definitely not losing sleep over this super minor issue.

Have to say though, during the partial flaking period, the tips are unsightly. I would rather it's either uniformly all natural stainless steel look or all black. |

Update...
Today my exhaust has been replaced for the 3rd time...
Both sides have been replaced as they inform me the entire back part is replaced. Only took 90 mins at the dealer ... Fingers crossed this is the last time!

Also, any feedback from your own dealer regarding whether BMW finally gets the right (non-defective) part? Obviously, they know you will come back again if the part wasn't right... thanks. |
