These things have a brake pedal? Whaaaaaaaaa? Say it isn't so. Italy is a beautiful country to drive in. Roads here in the north are pretty good, and it's not a police state. Ergo, cops (the few you see on the street) don't have radar on the dash. And if they do pull over to setup a speed trap, they have to put out signs that warn you 100 meters before you roll up on them. Viva l'Italia! Who needs brakes?

my E71 X650i, same driving routes and styles, gets me 15mpg

But hey, gas price is coming down folks so relax.
I hear ya. I always felt like my M3 inhaled gas.

Fortunately, you don't buy M cars for fuel efficiency

The real concern is range, not MPG, for me.

I go on long road trips all the time - just got back from a 3500-mile jaunt through Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota... the range on the X3 M is actually bad enough to induce range anxiety. I don’t always take interstates. County and state roads. Sometimes you go 200 miles without seeing a gas station.

My F90 M5 is averaging 24 on the highway here in SoCal and she is a heavy gal at around 4,300 pounds. I know that most people who buy M vehicles are not worried about gas mileage, I know I was not when I transitioned from my F80 M3 to my current M5. Around town I stay around 17 miles to the gallon and on the freeway the best I have done is 26 on a long trip. With a mixture of driving 22 mpg is the average. One would think the X3M would do better but maybe its the aerodynamics of the vehicle.

Our M5 is our fun (third vehicle) vehicle and is driven on the weekends. We bought it over a new Porsche 911 S. The wife of 32 years said she was not comfortable riding in it (911) and she looked me straight in the eyes and stated, " If you think I'm riding in this car to Vegas or our weekend get away your crazy". She also felt the same way in the 2012 Corvette Z06/Z07. I have a work vehicle issued to me so my work pays for the gas. With that being said it can get old spending more time at the gas pump filling up. The wife wants a X3 and she is the frugal one of the bunch. It will be hard time selling her on the gas mileage. Looks like we are back to the X3M40i. Truth be told she said the X3M40i was fast enough and did not need the speed or performance.

I have had many friends that have had performance vehicles that were getting under 15 mpg and after the honeymoon was over they traded it.

Expecting our X3M Comp without panoramic roof to weigh in less than 4500lbs, so your F90 still has about 150-200lbs less weight in city traffic for acceleration where it matters most. On Hwy no doubt the aerodynamics of your M5 should allow improved efficiency over our X3M, everything else including driving style being the same. Back in 2014 I looked at HP required for different constant speeds on the Hwy, where aerodynamics take precedence and weight plays less of a role, and this is where you would shine, esp at speeds 90mph and up. Take 90mph as an example - the 550i needed about 50HP to maintain speed in this simulation, whereas the X3 35i needed about 70HP. At 110mph, the 550i needs abt 84HP, the X3 - 118HP.

What I don't know, does a 6cylinder 500HP engine producing 118HP use the same amount of gas as a 300HP 6 cylinder?

X3M40i vs X3M mileage wise, I doubt you get 1mpg better on X3M40i driven the same manner.

Yes my guess is they are sand bagging it to be conservative. Most likely will be better unless driven hard. Mine started production today so we will see. Same experience with my Alpina, the true numbers are much better and I average 22-23 easily without a lead foot.

That is not so good. Roughly what my Macan GTS got. Now my 328D gets around 45 on Highway around 80 MPH and can go higher up if I drop down to around 70 MPH.

Diesels are simply incredible when it comes to gas mileage. From the reviews I've seen, the X3M40d is not a boring SUV by any means. But at the end of the day, I crave the explosive power of a gasoline engine. Well, that is until I find a practical electric with better performance to take its place.
