Can we talk about that MPG?

I've never been one to complain about MPG, especially in an M car but holy hell 14/19 is awful. That's worse than the GLC 63 and worse than my S65 M3! This adds another knock against the X3M that does not make much sense.

No you just go into every thread on this forum and complain about everything regarding these cars and how much you hate them.

Somewhere out there is a Tesla Model X with your name on it.

Really? Huh. I just went back through my posts and I don't see any complaining. It is however quite notable if the X3M gets the above mentioned MPG as it would be worst in segment by far and worse than V8 numbers.

I would have to agree the mpg can sour a potential buyer. For me I would buy it to have for 10 plus years. Would be doing trips around the state and don't necessarily want to fill up every few miles. Plus what is to say you don't get one that will not even achieve 19 highway.

I agree the MPG is awful. How is the MPG the same as the X5M which is 640lbs heavier, has 2 more cylinders and 60 more hp?

Where did these 14/19 numbers come from? If you look at the tech documents (page 6) that were previously posted is shows l/100km is 10.5

10.5 Liters per 100 km = 22.40 U.S. MPG

Edit:
Oh I see, the random review sites list it differently. Seeing as they don't even agree with each other, I think it's safe to say that you should trust BMW (the manufacturer) technical documents for a vehicle over a random website.

AutoExpress 26.9 mpg
Automobile 14/19
Autoweek 14/19
Car and Driver 16/14/19
Car Magazine 26.9 mpg

Hey. I've been accused of that ...

Actually, I'll admit I was shocked by the MPG as well. But then I also saw that it does 0-60 in 3.9... that's probably faster than the not-even-made-yet M2 CS. Even with a DCT.. .. With rear seats and a hatch ...

I'm just not sure I need to get to Home Depot that quickly ..

AutoExpress 26.9 mpg
Automobile 14/19
Autoweek 14/19
Car and Driver 16/14/19
Car Magazine 26.9 mpg
AutoExpress and Car Magazine are british mags so they pull data from the euro testing cycle which is more optimistic than ours. The UK also uses the Imperial Gallon which is 4.5 liters while the US gallon is 3.7 liters. That also explains the higher MPG from the british mags.

Either way, who cares what auto magazines say they think it is when there is documentation from the manufacturer that can be easily converted to US MPG.

14/19 probably about right
My F80 M3 is hardly gets 19mpg on mix driving, that's on 2WD 3600lb car. Yes you can get 19mpg on X3M on very long trip, hardly any braking on freeway cause once you move momentum requires little gas to burn to maintain speed, but you probably fall asleep on the trip like that

my E71 X650i, same driving routes and styles, gets me 15mpg

But hey, gas price is coming down folks so relax.

The 14/19 numbers come directly from BMW during the Monticello event. That's why they are reporting them. Real world numbers may be different but that seems unlikely. So we all have to individually decide if we care or not. I care a little. Mostly I'm just disappointed that 14/19 is worse than my S65. I average 15-17 driving 60% highway in the V8 so I guess that would put me 14-16 in an X3M. Pay to play!

Gas mileage concerns can be easily negated by considering Toyota Prius which resembles X4M at a distance of approximately 10,000 light years. Otherwise, X4M can be enjoyed without any concerns knowing someone else with Tesla Model 3 will reduce carbon foot print.

Autogefühl review: 1:10:32 total video time. Fuel discussion at various points but more focused at times 1:01:02 – 1:01:52, ‘if you drive like this the mileage is not going to be good, right now we’re seeing it says 14l/100km – I totally understand that but I don’t care, you wouldn’t buy an M Competition model with mileage being your primary concern… And on the highway if you’re using a very light throttle and you’re making smart decisions and not overtaking all the time and you’re planning your moves a little bit ahead of time, so that way you can easily see numbers as low as 9l/100km and I think that is a very respectable number. But if you’re driving like this, and you’re gonna want to drive like this with this car, yeah, you’re gonna have to be OK with that…'

9l/100km is about what our G01 M40i models have obtained HWY [ https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1440682 ], depending on atmospheric conditions. 'YMMV' will definitely apply with these vehicles.

the current M4 comp is rated at 17/23.. 19 combine
MX3 comp is rated at 14/19.. 16 combine:
+60hp
+AWD
+SUV size/weight
=3 or 4 mpg penalty over the M4 coupe

With my X5M I have been able to do more aggressive downshifting and more aggressive acceleration to get my average mpg to 15.0. If you see yourself drifting up then just drive with more throttle. No need to worry about achieving too high of a fuel efficiency when it is so easily and enjoyably corrected.

Wow! Didn't yours come with more than 3 gears?

Mine's never rated itself above 19.1 mpg after 8000 miles.

That's the problem over here. I'm either in the first three gears in the city or the top gear on the autostrada where I average 100mph. While the X3 is pretty aerodynamic for an SUV, there's still a significant amount of wind resistance. I suppose that X3 would do better than 15 on the highway but only if I kept it under 65mph. That would put me in the slow lane with all the trucks. That ain't happenin'. I would shock the hell out of Audi A6s with that M40i. They're used to being one of the faster autostrada cruisers commonly seen in Italy flashing their lights expecting everyone to yield to them. Imagine their shock when they got stomped by a little 3 series suv. I just hope my fuel economy doesn't go down to something ridiculous like 12 now. That would take some getting used to, but rest assured I wouldn't slow down to compensate!
Ciao

Same engine but F26 base, average mpg is above 23, best above 26. 90% time on Sport mode. Of course in Italy 23 is impossible... You guys really needs to release your feet from the brake pedal
