Things to look out for on an M54 Engine?
I'm going to look at an 05 x3 .. i has an m54 with 100k on it.
I've been doing a lot of research. I see some issues about piston rings on these motors? Is this a common thing? Any other major things to look out for? |

I've got an M54 that's done 177k, it's been serviced regularly with the correct oil and filter though. Mechanically sound and still strong as an ox!
Got a bit of a problem with it though just recently, will be posting a thread about it shortly but otherwise, it's been solid. |

I have recently rebuilt an M54B30 in my 330i (same engine as my X3) that had 313000km's on it, when I broke down the engine I was surprised at what I saw, the hone marks were clear as day.
Suspecting that it may have been a replacement engine, I contacted BMW to get the engine number based on the VIN of my X3, it was the correct engine, when I told the guys at BMW, they said the engine was not run in yet. Anyway, in answer to the OP question, the rings were in good condition even after 313000km's, the only reason the engine was pulled apart was to replace 4 bent valves. Engine is running smooth after the rebuild. |
