UK - winter tyres, do we need them ?
Hi all
Picking up an X3M CP next week, have no idea if it’ll come with the Conti’s or the PS4’s, doesn’t matter all that much right now, question is do we really need winter tyres ? Really really need them ? If so, tyre swaps or spare set, what’s the opinions ? |

😂 Highly recommend winters, as it is not just about snow and ice. Summers under 7deg C (which is pretty common in UK winter) are useless, and more so on a 2.5 ton SUV with 21" tyres and 450+ bhp (no idea what it actually is, as I only have a lowly M40i with 360bhp) I have my 19" winter wheels and tyres on now

I know, but they were giving the X3MC away, it was rude not to. But at around £1k for a set of tyres, it's just not on the cards. I work at home, in the winter my car barely gets driven, especially in the snow, and it certainly doesn't get driven aggressively in the cold or wet.

We will be buying winters for our new X4M as the difference in grip when it’s really cold is noticeable, running winters also prolongs the life of your summers as they are sitting in the garage for a few months so you’ll spend £1000 on tyres at some point anyway

When I handed by my 430i after 3 years, the tyres still looked like new. Didn't change tyres in 3 years. Previous car, 320d I replaced 4 tyres within the first year through punctures, but none thereafter for 3 years of ownership. Depends on your mileage (and luck with punctures).

Winter tyres for me are a must have.
I have run them on even BMW I have owned. TBH the traction issue is not a concern for me, you generally drive according to the conditions. However, the braking capability and stability on cold wet roads are enough to justify the expense of the winter rubber alone. I echo the statement above about saving your summer tyre tread too, as well as minimising the salt in your nice diamond cut rims. I don’t think of them as ‘winter’ tyres, they are cold weather tyres that in my neck of the woods are on for an easy 4-5 months of the year minimum. Having said that, I’m thinking twice about splashing out £4K with the winter set for the X3 this time round. |

It's a individual decision pending your location and commute. I have a crazy steep 100m driveway and a challenging commute when icy.
I bought a decent winter wheel pkg for £1,600. A chunk of change but not all for not as they will last me 3 years and save wear and tear on my summer wheels and tyres. At the end of the day I'll sell them for 50%. 19" Autec Kitano Black Winter Alloy Wheels for BMW X4 2019 M40d £616.55 Details: 245/50 R19 Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV ROF ZP* 105V £825.55 Options: Details: OE BMW Sensor Valves £150.86 VAT 20% included £265.49 Delivery (FREE Mainland UK): Total: £1,592.96 |
