Delaying bringing the car to the U.S. doesn't mean it's never coming here.

It is not a very important car for BMW by the looks of it. Delayed by a year, RWD, i don't how much worse it can get for the IX3?!
It will be slaughtered by the Y also, which is here now

Probably won’t be able to compete well against the Model Y.

It wasn't going to sell, it was going to be a dud with its small range. It's a smart business move.

Read somewhere essentially they car won't pass the 300 miles for range so it makes sense not to bring it here.

And Model Y is in Europe and Asia as well. They'd just cancel it if they needed to avoid Model Y markets.

Other EVs have had no problem competing against Tesla in those other markets, but they care less about the marketing of range numbers than the US market does.

A rear wheel drive electric SUV with a 200-ish mile range? I mean, who ISN’T clamoring for such a vehicle?

Delaying it wasn’t smart, it was necessary. It never should’ve been signed off for production with these specs, not without higher models with more power, more range, and dual motor AWD available at the same time.

Wouldn't be able to compete, especially at the price point they'll be asking for. Plus, this thing will be due for a facelift very soon after release.

Makes no sense as the model y is the biggest thing in the US. Is this not made in the US or are electric SAVs made elsewhere?

Another Tesla competitor bites the dust. All of the promising contenders either come in overpriced or underperform. $50,000/300 miles sure seems doable.

Makes sense, this is a better alternative to say X2 for example for more densely populated area (read Asia/Europe)

The iX3 will be built in China.

Furthermore, it was designed in China for the Chinese market. This is the primary reason why features like AWD and a battery capable of providing over ~200 miles of range were not prioritized.

Unfortunately, the lack of those features makes the vehicle a much tougher sell in the US, and with the Model Y hitting the market later this month and boasting much more compelling specs, the BMW offering just wasn't going be competitive. It makes more sense for BMW to focus on selling this vehicle in markets where its minimal feature set is less an issue. There are a number of EVs available in Asia and Europe that are not sold in the US, and many of them have more modest range and power output than the market leader in the US, Tesla. So, the iX3 will no doubt fare better in these regions.

The iNext with its dual motor configuration and available 300-mile-plus range is a better way to introduce electric BMW SAVs to the American market. Of course, it means we'll have to wait for another year and half (or so).

Everybody arguing RWD is unnecessary, please also ask yourself if you actually need SUV/SAV: handles much worse, less safe due to rollover risk, not much gain off-road these days unless a Wrangler or RR, space usually comparable to a sedan on the same platform. If you really need space, get a minivan or wagon (like Euros)! The pleasure of having an SUV is similar to the pleasure of having AWD: not necessary most of the time, but feel good staying high up, just as good as feeling being able to put power down through all four wheels.

Guys,

Why would BMW need an electric SUV like IX3 when they are about to launch the iNext crossover? Mmm?

This IS a "real car". What makes it not real? I press the accelerator and it goes. What else do you need in a commuter/city car?
My golf cart does that too, does it make it a real car? No.
I think the real car he meant was 6MT RWD Front COMBUSTION Engine
Golf carts don't go 90mph on the highway for more than a hundred miles. I don't need a combustion engine on my commute. I just want to get to work conveniently. I don't need a 6MT to commute either. I much prefer automatic.

Is the i3X FWD? That is disappointing. The reason I like the i3 is because it's RWD for maximum traction under acceleration. It just feels better than a FWD electric car.

What I dont understand is if you can get 300+ miles out of an i4 how could you not out of a larger iX3.

I would think if they did this right the American market would eat up an electric X3 as long as awd was available.

This really is a bummer for those of us who were really looking forward to this car. I get that they may not have sold a lot of them, but this is also the company that brought over a 3 series GT. I mean, the business case for that has be lower volume than an electric suv with 200 miles range? We are on our second leaf right now (the plus with 210 mi range) for commuting and local errands and it's awesome. Electric is amazing. Range is not an issue unless we want to go on a road trip. And then we just take the 340. I want electric cars to look and have the functionality of a regular ICE car. That's why the iX3 was going to be so great.

I am glad Tesla exists because they are pushing other manufacturers to come to the table with good electric cars, but I would never buy a Tesla. Quality is sub par and there is no after purchase support. Tesla is a good tech company and they make great batteries. They have not figured out how to be a car company though. As much as it pains me, I think our next electric now will be the vw id4 or maybe Hyundai Kona. With two kids, a medium size suv makes sense so the bmw i4 won't be the answer.
