How the heck did you do that?! I tried and tried to avoid the RFTs on my 2020 and couldn't (even with the spare tire option). I thought it was supposed to be "you get what you get and you don't pitch a fit!"

The dealer worked with me, basically. I bought a car from their inventory, and all of them had summer RFT's, both 20" and 21". I live in an area where temperatures and a bit of snow mean summer tires are no go. They agreed to swap out the summer RFT's for all seasons of my choice. I was impressed with their flexibility and willingness to do so.

I just got the dreaded rattle today; sounds like it's coming from the read driver side panoramic roof. I'm going to take it straight to the dealer for a fix.

After 10 month and over 10,000 km of driving, I am glad to said I found the source of all the noises.

1. There is noise coming from the back of the fix glass. It is caused by the glass contact with the seal. As the glass vibrates it makes the noise. I put foams under the two corners under the glass to support the glass from moving up and down the noise was gone.

2. There is noise from the front of the fix glass, when over bumps, the glass vibrates and hits the rail making ticking noise. I put foams under the two front corners, noise is gone. (This one takes me the money of time to find)

3. The back of the moving glass. The glass vibrates and his the rubber flare on the edge of the front of the fix glass makes ticking noise. I put few very thin foam tapes on the groove under the edge of the moving glass. Close the roof fully and then loosen the back mounting screws on both passenger side and driver side. Push down the glass then tighten the screws back. After that, the two glasses will have very little movement while going over bumps.

4. Noise from the front of the moving glass contacting the seal. I have to adjust the moving glass completely since the glass was sitting too far back. I have to loosen the 4 screws that holds the moving glass and push the glass a bit forward.

I have been driving for 3 days now. No noise from the roof. The car becomes very quite. I also fix the noises from the plastic trim pieces in the trunk. The car is pretty quite now. Much more relax during driving now
Which plastic trim pieces in the trunk are you referring to? I have been hearing clicking/creaking sound when going over uneven road on passenger side. I'm RHD by the way.

The noise was from the interface between panel 1 and 2. There are four screws holding the panel 2. But these four screws do not line up the mounting hole perfectly. So when the screws get tighten up, the panel deforms a bit causing the rubbing in the interface. Also when you go over bumps, movements between 1, 2, and 3 will make the noise. I took all these panels off piece by piece and fitted the gap with foams to reduce touching and movements

I'm a RHD car too and have the dreaded squeaks coming from boot area of car going over bumps etc. Seems to be coming from passenger side and suspect the panels you have described.

I appreciate you have noted coming from right hand side but can you provide a bit more detail on what you found, which panels you removed and how, plus finally where did you put the foam.

Sorry if I've asked a lot but you're the first person I've read that's had a similar squeak in the boot.

Thanks heaps....

roof fix

I didn't read through all the posts but I have a 2013 x3 and fixed the roof noise 100%. I even told BMW dealer how to do it, even though they didn't seem to care.
I'm not sure how to post a pic here but there are two spots that you need to place a small piece of foam on that will take the noise away. Furniture food pads work perfectly.
If anyone wants to private msg me with their e mail I will shoot pics and send to you.

You're posting about your non-G01 X3 in the G01 X3 forum. Your 2013 X3 is not a G01.

I still experienced same noise after refitting those panels. So I have tried to play around two more parts.

1. Is the panel that covers the seat belt, I pull them off, there are three clip to make it clip on the base. I pull 1 off and add thin foam on the empty clip and reinstall the panel back.

2. Is the C pillar panel. This I felt is the most contributing factor to the noise. I have the take it off, there is a screw hides behind the airbag logo. And you can simply pull the plastic piece out. The bottom of the piece slides into the seat belt plastic trim. It is a hard plastic to a hard plastic contact. Very easy to make the squeaking noise. What I did was to add foam again into the groove on the base plastic that receives the c pillar trim. Then just force it back to position and reinstall the screw.

So far, 99.9% of the time, the car does not produce the squeak. By the way I found a new way to put the foam piece under the front of the fixed glass. That eliminate the vibration noise coming from the top of the driver.

I know the added foam looks crappy but they work and you can't see them after reinstalling the trim pieces back properly

I've also had this with every vehicle I've owned with a pano roof when the temperature fluctuates. Will try the lube though!

Hi. Do you remember if you saw an airbag in the C pillar? I took mine out today and can't seem to find one! (It does have the airbag logo)

The airbag it is referring to is the head airbag just above the c pillar in the headliner

Thanks. I thought it was like the one in the A pillar (actually ON the pillar), with the airbag logo.

FIXED IT!

Three years ago i bought an brand new X3. After about 14 months the sunroof/moonroof started to squak. The dealer removed the entire moonroof, cleaned the seals and re-alligned the roof when remounting it. The squak/rattle was gone for about 1.5 years. Untill two months ago.

At BMW they say it is a known aspect of moonroofs. Its part of the product. It is temperature an moist dependend. If your cars sits in the garage all day it is unlikely to happen. However, I park outside (at home and at the office). Off course there are more important things in life, but it was the only squak and once you hear it, you can't 'unhear' it. It is annoying.

Since my warranty is almost over i decided to see if i could fix it myself. I did not like the prospect of paying the dealer to remount and clean the roof every 1,5 years.

I am glad to say I have found a fix for the issue! I decided to take some pics and write the solution down, so that it may help others. Please note that I took the pics a while after I cleaned it, so my pics do not show much dirt. But belief me, there was a lot.

The cause
The cause of the squak is that dirt accumulates between the seal of the moonroof. The dirt consists mosty of sand that probably washes between the seal during rain, carwash, etc.

Removing the dirt and lubricating the seal, fixed the issue. I guess that the frequenty you need to maintain the seal, depends on the climate. Where I live (Europe, NL) it rains often and the cars get dusty quickly.

Solution
Please not that there are probably better ways to do this. If you find one, please let me know.

A. First I lubbed the seal to make sure it would not damage it. I used Gummi Pflege Stift (found on Amazon). Just move it around the seal and create a nice white line that site between the seal.

B. Then I used something to stick between the seal. I found that an item i used to clean the AC vents, was perfect. Just stick it in and move it around the entire moonroof. Pull it out often, clean it and stick it in again. A lot of black dirt came out of my seal. Due this build up, the roof starts to make noises.

C. When it is clean, lube the entire seal again by creating a nice white line of Gummi and softly push the Gummi a bit between the seal, by using some sort of stick again. I lubbed all the rubber seals around the roof. Also the rubbers on the front part of the roof that slides open…

D. Enjoy your drive. I hope this helps some of you!

Edit: sorry the pics are a bit large, but i cant get them any smaller…

I have the Gummi, will try this.

I get a loud cracking sound from my moonroof in the morning when I back out of my driveway. Seems if there is some sort of twisting force on the chassis it will make the pop. It will also happen if the car has been sitting for a few hours. But it happens at least once a day, sounds like something being dropped on the moonroof.

This is exactly the issue that will be fixed with the clean and lube.

Dont forget to lube the rubber part on the inside of the car that can be accessed when the roof tilts to the ventilation stand.

Run the procedure twice, still have the noise. Will try the Mothers rubber lube.
