Panoramic roof rattle

I have discussed this in a previous post but did not specifically label the post as such. I have had a rattle that sounds like it is coming from behind me in the roof area. I have taken it to the shop and the dealer said they couldn’t replicate the rattle. I’m waiting to have my trim pieces replaced for defective ambient lighting and will re-address this when I take it in. I had a friend ride with me today and he sat in the back. He said he heard the rattle but it sounded like it was in front of him. To me it sounded like it was behind me. I was finally able to isolate the noise and stop the rattling by putting a little pressure on the edge of the articulating glass. Im sharing this because I’m sure others have heard this rattling but could figure it out. I’ll follow up once get the car to the dealer and back. I know at least one other person who had the same experience.

Thank you for sharing this. I have the exact same rattle, and I can make it go away by doing the exact same thing. I'm taking it in to see if they can fix it next week. I'd really love to discover some way of fixing it at home so I don't have to take it in.

Please share your findings with the dealer. This kind of specific posts help others diagnose their own issues. I’m hoping for a permanent fix when I take my car in. Sometimes they lubricate the seals and that will get rid of creaks but only for a while.

Phew, glad to know i'm not the only one, it didn't start rattling until about 3 months and seems to be sensitive to temperature/sun exposure. I don't get the rattle late afternoon or at night, but it's the loudest in full sun around 10AM-2PM here in Austin.

And doesn't rattle on bumps, but rather rough-ish roads with a lot of surface variation or small potholes.

I was worried that they'd say it was because of the new roof cross bars but it started before that and has gotten louder.

I have the same noise (I think)...been wanting my wife to ride in the back to try and locate the noise while I drive. I'll check the sunroof today.

A quick picture of the area would help the community. I know I'm interested .

I can post a picture but it is the area where the articulating glass meets the fixed portion of the panoramic roof. The seam where those two meet.

Thanks for posting the details I've been dealing with this too. Dealer "fixed" it but then I had a different rattle from a similar area that was temporarily solved by pressing on the overhead console where the sunroof controls are held.

Does anyone else have an update on getting this fixed? I’m still waiting for my ambient trim pieces to arrive so I can take the car in. Mine is rattling pretty consistently now and is driving me crazy. Everyone riding in my new car key asking “what was that rattle?”. It’s kinda embarrassing.

Here is a link that shows the proper adjustment of the roof panels. You migh want to check to make sure everything is lined up as a first step.

I lubed the outside rubber seals at the back of the glass panel and roof junction, where I was getting a rattle. Has been quiet since I did this.

Interestingly enough, I experienced this roof rattle once and it hasn't returned after that. Hoping it was just a tease and never comes back.

Either worked well for me. I like the Mothers because it is a little thicker. And smells terrific.

My 2 Audi's, my 2 Benz and my M40i all had rattling Pano's. I tried to correct the first one but when the weather would get much cooler or hotter it would just come back so I ignore the rattle now.

Rattling is a very common complaint regarding pano sunroofs. I have a friend currently battling the same issue on his 5K mile Volvo SUV,

I believe BMW did the right thing by skipping the pano sunroof on the BMW G30 5-Series and instead, adding a larger opening while still using a single panel glass. No issues here after 18K miles.

This is my 3rd bmw with a pano roof in addition to countless loaners over the years and it is the only one I have experienced this rattle. If we don’t voice our displeasure with these rattles, they’ll never be fixed.

Hi All,

Noticed the rattle in the sunroof in mine after I picked it up 2 weeks ago.

It only does it at speeds up to 80kmh... on a freeway over 100kmh it doesn't at all.

Air pressure at higher speeds may push it down I guess?

Dealer is having a look at it next week...

I'll report back when/if fixed
