When my wife tried to turn on our 2020 X3 M40i with the fob by pushing the start button, the vehicle made her place the key near the right side of the steering column before it would start.
We've never had this happen before. I can't figure out what the X3 was requiring with this action and wondered if anyone knows.

As per manual, this would be needed if the remote control is not detected. There could be some interference in the signal, or more likely, the battery on the fob is dead.

My20 X3 it has happened to me a few times, installed new fob battery still happened, left cell out of car & still happened, weird but always started when held fob by steering wheel & then would be normal for a week & then again no fob found error

I have the same problem with one of my key fobs. I had dealer replaced the battery and it was good for about a month then the problem came back. since the car is still under warranty, I plan to have the dealer replace it.
