8th Gear

Is it just me or is the fact it wont stay in 8th gear really annoying??

I am not a boy racer anymore and spend most of my time just cruising around. If it does go into 8th as soon a I touch the throttle is goes into 7th. I find I spend most on my time in manual so it stays in 8th.

I realise its an "M" car but i have had a few in the past and several RS's etc and never had this bother.

Can't say I've noticed it either. Let the box do its thing.

I stared started driving it manually tonight and it's much better in terms of response and being where you want it to be, I found with my last 3 MDCT cars that it was the better way to drive the car and this ZF seems to be set up in a similar way (like an auto trying to be DCT but without the thumps)

Depends on speed. Due to the peaky nature I'd the torque delivery - at 60-70mph a prod of the accelerator will drop it down a gear. Go into manual at 60mph in 8th and try and accelerate. This engine is not as flexible as say the B58

I think it's a great box. Coming out of a new dsg RS3 which was so slow and annoying when in auto, this box is night and day better

When you guys say highway, you on the dual carriageway.

I am mainly on poor "A" roads running around 60ish.

Yeah I think that's the issue. 60ish just a bit slow for 8th

It's actually not the drive or throttle setting - it's the transmission. You want it on 1 "bar", not 2 or 3. It is the button on top of the shifter and the display next to the gear display. A lot of people don't fiddle with it.

correcto - even 70-75 will kick down if you try and overtake. Or maybe i am just to heavy right footed to do it with finnesse

either way, think you just have to accept this and let the box do its magic. when ready to pick up the pace, just knock it doen a couple of cogs and then go, marvelling on the pace and the sweet short shifting.......well, thats what is keeping me amused for the 1st 1200 miles

Aye sounds about right.

I am still under the 1200 as well. JC Aberdeen are saying around £400 for RIS. Will need to pin them down to a price, around ££ does not work for me. Especially in Aberdeen

The throttle setting does change the gearbox mapping within the selected D mode much more eager to drop cogs in sport+/D1 than efficient/D1, the issue with D2/3 (just like in the MDCT) is it wants to hold on to the gear for too long making driving it on the throttle (slight lift to change up) difficult.

It has many of the characteristics of MDCT (clearly they have tried to ape it) minus the gear change thumps.

I went out yesterday and went through all the settings comparing it to my M3/M5 and just like them if you want to keep the revs above 2k for a good response from the engine in 2nd gear and above S is the best mode you just flick between 2-3-4 in general driving as there is loads of torque above 2k in those gears, setting off in 2nd is also a benefit in town/urban driving.

It's much cleaner driven like that less of that elastic band feeling when it puts the car into a biblically high gear at low rpm. (obviously if you're just cruising at 70mph on an A road then just wack it in D.

Are you specifically wanting a BMW garage or are you happy with any VAT registered garage with genuine parts?
