Tow hitch rust?

Hi,

I got a factory installed tow hitch on my MY 2019 m40i and recently started using it for a bike carrier. I noticed that the black paint is starting to rub off (to be expected I suppose since it's metal on metal). I see a ton of SUV's with a lot of rust on the hitch and i'm guessing it's because the paint has rubbed off and water started rusting the metal. What's a good way to prevent that from happening? Re-paint it every so often? If yes, what kind of paint should be used?

Thanks!

Now I know why a lot of people use a tennisbal to cover the towbar ball!

Did you lose the rubber cap that came on the hitch from factory? I put mine back on when not in use and it keeps it relatively water/debris free.

No, I still have it. If that's sufficient to prevent rust, great. Wasn't sure though. It's the first time I've had a hitch.

I spray a little wd 40 in there and get a light coating in it. Then use the cap.

Tow bar question.

When you had your dealer-fitted towbar sorted, did you have to have any other mods done to the cooling fan or oil cooling system that you know of? ..... TIA

It's how it works. Metal on metal + vibration = rust.

Painting every now and then is a solution, and is also a treadmill. If you want to do that, you are free to choose that path.

Rubber covers and tennis balls cover rust, but will not prevent it. See the metal on metal comment above.

I have towed and trailered for decades and accept that rust is part of the game.

The WD40 suggestion is the right direction. The paint will always come off, you need to occasionally rub it with oil to coat the metal with a thin layer of protection and it should be fine. Repainting works, but you’ll always be repainting it, so oil is probably your best option. You can rub with oil then wipe it clean with a dry cloth, it should leave a thin layer of protective coating.
