key battery empty?

my 2020 x3 is new to me by about 6 weeks. I keep getting a message that my battery key is empty, even though I changed the battery in the key fob. What to do next?

I had a dead spare key and changed the battery, but it did no good. Car was due a service so asked them to look at it and the service advisor said BMW keys are sensitive to battery spec and maybe just a new BMW OE battery would do the trick. It did.

I've never heard of anything quite so ridiculous, nor had the SA either, but they said it was a common issue. 🤔

I had this issue with some amazon basics battery I ordered. I got different ones and they were fine. Has to be 3V - these ones work.

I've had good luck with the Panasonic CR2023 batteries. In fact, the loaner I'm driving complained that the key was "empty" so I went ahead and changed the battery so I wouldn't find myself either locked out and having to use the key or mess with putting the fob next to the steering column.

Energizer lithium. Some crazy shelf life and durable.

Do you have two fobs? Did you only replace the battery in one of them?

I changed the battery in my primary fob and also kept getting the battery empty message in the car . I changed the battery in my second fob and the message went away. ?? I now keep the second fob in a faraday bag and the Duracell battery I put in has lasted over a year so far . I also was told by my SA that there where a bad bunch of Duracell 2032 batteries coming from Amazon. I got mine at a Home Depot.

The battery that came out of the loaner's key fob was a Panasonic Industrial 2032. That's what I've been getting from Amazon and actually installed back into the key fob.

I had a similar issue with my F30 and the cause was some led door lights I installed. Still has me confused to this day. I’d get a notification about my key fob battery within a day of changing it. Spent weeks looking for reasons online and someone suggested if you have any aftermarket led lights for some reason they cause that error. Not sure if the same would apply to the G01 though 🤷🏾‍♂️
