It looks nice as it records from the front and rear. Worth the money? Do you still need Drive Recorder too?

Drive recorder is only active when the car is drive ready and doesn’t have a parking mode. However, it catches images from all sides, not just front and rear. Also, the way they record is different, a dash cam continuously loop records in 1 minute segments, while Drive Recorder only records when triggered.

Afaik, ACE 3 is an “accessory” on the BMW US build website, so it will be fitted by the dealer prior to delivery, rather than factory installed.

It’s probably worth the money if you’r concerned about you car being damaged whilst parked imo. That said, there’s no guarantee any incident will be captured or show useful information, and it’s not particularly discrete on the windscreen.

Are the recordings good or still frames? Recordings are clear both day and night.

How long does it record for on the move? Continuous recording while driving

When parked, is the recording is triggered on by sounds or touch or does it record continuously parked?
when parked, the recording are triggered by the car's own sensors. So if someone is about 3 feet away (maybe more), it triggers recording. Aside from normal recording duty while driving, I do like the park mode option of recording. One thing to note though is that it is not 360 so when someone drove by my parked car and scratched the passenger side, whilst it caught the car details coming towards it, recorded the "shake" of the car and captured the car driving away, it couldn't actually capture the car hitting my car!

While driving, the screen is not on so not distracted by the camera and the position of where it is mounted is does not obstruct my (or my passengers) view. its looks large but it really isn't. Happy with unit for the price paid.

My car is in production (week 22/end of May) and I asked the dealer to see how I can add the Ace 3.0 camera. And here is their response I received today.

Hi! Do you mind sharing how things ended up working out? My car is going into production ina couple of weeks and considering getting ACE 3.0. Was is factory or dealer installed? Also, was the price residualized (in case you leased)?

TIA!

I bought an ACE 3.0 with the intention of fitting it myself. I paid £140 for the camera (front only) but when I got it I didn't like it and sent it back. I didn't like it for a couple of reasons. 1. It was bigger than I was expecting (and this was the one without the screen). 2. The cable that comes from the camera was quite thick and so meant you couldn't mount the camera right at the top of the screen and it would be more trouble than it was worth trying to route the cable. In the end I fitted my old Viofo A119 and in my opinion it is a much neater installation and much less obtrusive. The cable is a lot thinner and so can be routed without removing any trim or pulling the head lining down. I also routed it down the left side of the car so I didn't have to get past the rear view mirror housing or go near the air bags in the A pillar

Does parking mode cause any parasitic drain power management issues ?

Out of curiosity, how does the BMW ACE get around that issue?

Best guess, either due to how ACE 3 taps the power, or there’s something in the ACE 3 that communicates with BMW power management.

Have you ever pulled down the roof lining? If you think youre pulling that out and putting it back in all lickety split without wrinkling it, youre sorely mistaken. 8 hours might be a little excessive, but id fully expect 5-6.

Have you had an ACE 3 fitted ?

The BMW UK dealer supply and fit ACE 3 pro front rear is around £579, or £475 for non pro. The pro hardware only via BMW UK eBay store is £344.

How much would 5-6 hours BMW tech time cost ? UK rate is over £100 per hour.

So finally dealer installed the Ace 3.0 dash cam for $810. But he was saying we gave you the website price because I had asked to be installed during the production. Otherwise it's going to be more expensive.

The dealer is taking the piss lol.

BMW don’t “install” this during production, but you can order with the new car order and it is a dealer fit option after factory delivery. Just like ordering a trunk liner or other accessory.

In the UK you can probably still get some good deals on the ACE 3.0, I can’t remember exactly what I paid for my front and rear ACE 3.0 but it was around £480 for both, fitted. The reason I got them for that reasonable price was that I showed my dealership some other dealership prices and persuaded them to price match.

Here is an example.

you can add it to your build while it is production through the BMW ordering system. Option ZKQ in 'via options.' Your CA should know. If you wait too long, you won't get it installed (technically) at the factory.

The Spartanburg Plant know has an accessory installation facility on site. Things are added there prior to being dispatched by rail (usually).
