N20 worries

So am I correct in my research in saying that the timing chain guide issue(s) on the N20 engines was "less of an issue" in the year models AFTER 2013? The reason I ask is because I have a 2017 X3 with the twin turbo 2.0 liter 4 banger. I'm thinking this is the N20? If so.... how worried should I be about my timing chain grenading my engine? Thanks in advance.

Yes, it has N20 engine. How many miles your bimmer has?
Some people reported their 2017 F25 reach over 100,000 miles.
BMW fixed TC issue around 2015 (I am not certain the exact year). Many people in this forum suggest changing engine oil more often to reduce the risk of failed timing chain. Some suggest to not using auto start and stop.

She just hit 70,000. One owner (dealership manager owned it as a "work" car to keep miles off of his M5. I have all service records, purchased a service plan through BMW which is good for 3 years or 100k miles but it does NOT cover the timing chain. For BMW to be so awesome they sure dropped the ball on their "fixing" the N20 issues. This is the first BMW that I've owner (not the first that I've driven) and I cannot put into words just how much I love this car. I find myself looking for reasons to drive long distances on my days off.

There is no issue on the 2017. Virtually all reported failures are 2013s, but the official word is it was corrected by early 2015. You also do not have a twin turbo. You have a single twin scroll turbo. It is one turbocharger with different ports to allow the turbo to spin into the boost range even at lower engine speeds to reduce turbo lag.

Ah! Thanks for enlightening me. Off topic, but, my mom had a 1985 Maserati Biturbo S model - like the one on Top Gear - and it was the biggest piece of shite.

My extended warranty from BMW Canada covers TC.
Not sure about BMW in US.

My 2015 F25 X3 has 145k miles on it, For the N20 BMW did update the Timing Chain and it's a good reliable motor if you take care of it, I just bought mine with 144,922 Miles on it and now it's at 145,146 Miles. All issues for 2013 Models were addressed in later years, but it'd overall an amazing engine and car. I hope your car is as reliable as mine!

tom2021 There is a loop hole here in the states but only if you reside in California. Even that is limited to specific vehicle(s) and time limitations.

I have 3 BMWs now and all three with the exception of my wife's 320d Kombi have been problematic. I have had the Lexus 1gen IS300 with the 2JZ motor and that thing is indestructible. The most reliable car I have ever owned. My next car SUV will be a Mazda CX5. Don't get me wrong, I love BMWs but that is like having a girlfriend that you are really into but you know could easily let you down...
