Quick question, your supposed to keep the battery between 20 & 80 percent so that's 44.4kwh X 3 miles = 133.2 miles. It's that what people have been getting on average or do you literally charge it every night or so? Some sites (I think it was the MG site) I've seen say between 20 & 80 but don't let it drop below 50 too often for best longevity. That means you only have 30% of actual range or 66.6 miles for the best life of the battery. This seems a bit restrictive and probably rubbish.

Not trying to pick faults, it's just that I'm buying this car so want it to last. If I was leasing it I'd be much less worried.

I charge 20 to 80. From researching on older EV cars, battery degradation doesn't seem to be bad enough to be concerned about. I think the tech becoming obsolete will have a greater impact on depreciation over the long term. For example, switching off of older protocols on data networks. This is a concern for older i3 drivers.

So I believe part of the reason the usable capacity of the battery is lower than the gross battery capacity (74kWh instead of 80kWh) is to protect the battery. If you charge "fully" you are only ever charging to about 90%.

The general rules of thumb to keep your battery in its best condition is don't fully charge it unless you have to, don't let it drain to 0% unless you have to, and don't fast charge it too often. If you do it on the odd occasion it's not the end of the world, its just not best practice. Now all of this kind of goes out the window if you plan on only keeping the car for 3-5 years.

A lot of people complain about things like this, but ICE cars come with their own constraints that most people abide to without even thinking about it. Such as not redlining your car all the time and not thrashing it from cold - both to protect the engine. This is the electric car version of that.

For peace of mind though, the easiest thing to do is just keep topping it up at home. Personal situation varies of course, but I don't do major mileage, maybe 40-50 a day on average. So I plan to just plug in every other or third day, and charge to full. As selfish as it may be, it's a company car and will only be with me for 4 years, then it becomes someone else's problem.

Does anyone know is bmw changed/updated algorytm for calculating range(quietly)?
Last 2 weeks it is behaving very stange(range counter), fully charge showing 225miles range, getting close to destination (~185miles trip) and I almost runout of juce!
With steady speed70-75 was accurate to about 5miles range now is 30+ miles difference(loosing range).

My is still on factory software (premier version) only done OTA map update to 2022.3, never seen service since picking it up new.

Just an update of what mi/kWh I am actually getting after 3 full months with the car. This is based energy charged as recorded at the car, so does include some charging losses I believe:

August 2643 miles average mi/kWh 2.88
September 2530 miles average mi/kWh 2.92
October 2928 miles average mi/kWh 2.97

What miles per kwh are you getting?

3390 miles since collection on August 24.
1092 kWh added to the car
Average 3.1 miles per kWh

Very similar figures to EVFan

I'm going to continue updating my spreadsheet as I am very interested to see how much it goes down through the winter.
With my previous car it was about 30%, but I have a feeling this one won't be quite as much as that (fingers crossed)

I did notice that the really windy and rainy conditions yesterday on my commute seemed to knock the range down more than the temperature. I struggled to bit 3 mi/kWh on the committee home last night in those conditions yet bit 3.4 this morning in 7 degrees but dry and calm conditions

So we have had the car 6 weeks now.

Using “B” & “Comfort” mode I can’t seem to get it above 2.7 and when fully charged at 100% never get above 200 mile range.

Just wondering if this is a trigger to take back to the dealer and query, or if it is perfectly normal?

My driving style is probably pretty normal, and is mostly about town with the odd motorway trip once a week or so.

sounds like it is low to me, on the same mix I would expect minimum of 3.0, but more like 3.3 - 3.5

Thanks for the 2 replies above.

Should I raise it with the dealer do you think?

With regards to where I drive, it’s mostly urban across central Scotland.

Sorry, still a bit naive when it comes to understanding the workings of an EV!

That does sound low. I have put about 200 miles on ours in two weeks in either Comfort of Sport mode....mixture of town and motorway driving...and it's been showing a pretty consistent 31.1 for the last week now.

I doubt there is anything wrong with your car. I spend most of my time on the motorway at a steady speed through managed motorway sections so really helps my consumption figures.

Around town I can be anywhere between 2.2 and 3.0.

The range is just a guess. The number of times my car has said a range of below 200 and I have traveled to work 35 miles away and still had the same remaining range on the display is by now a regular occurrence.

Cheers. Will keep an eye on it (and my driving style) over the next month or so and report back.

During the week my (56 mile each way) journeys are 20% rural 60% motorway and 20% urban where my dash tells me 2.9-3.2 mi/kWh, but at the weekends when more of my driving is in town I get better results, typically 3.1-3.5.
All driving done in B mode with speed limiter set to posted speed limit +4 mph (+2 for 20, 30 & 40 mph limits)

I’ve averaged 3.5 over just short of 10000m (16000km) in the last 10 months, and I’m not gentle on the “gas” pedal (but I do live in a warm climate).

I've got 2.9m per kWh over 11k miles so far, mostly motorway miles, my real world range based on fully charged has been between 200-300 dependant on conditions.

Temperature makes a difference, but find stormy/windy weather is the biggest range killer.

Will be very interesting to see where my battery capacity ends up, as I almost exclusively DC charge at around 50kwh.

We've also recently got a Tesla Model3 LR in the family, and that's doing worse, around 2.5m per kWh, which I didn't expect, it is early days, hopefully that one gets better.

Mine has dropped off a cliff in the last couple of weeks due to cold weather. Until recently I would easily get between 3.1 - 3.4 M/kWh which is all urban driving. Its now dropped to 2.1 but I have the car set to pre-condition for 07:20 which has big impact and no doubt the heaters will be on all day.

Yup, can attest to seeing the same "fall off a cliff" in consumption over the last few colder days. I do a very short commute to work so don't even get the benefit of some 'motorway miles' to increase my average.

Anything between 2.0-2.6mi/kWh.

Mine has also dropped a fair bit! From an average of around 3.2 - 3.4 to 2.5. The winter tyres went on a few weeks ago before it was really cold and that caused a drop of around 0.4 and the the cold weather around another 0.4.

I’ve got a 500 round trip (motorway miles) this weekend so I’ll see how it gets on and report back.

I did our first long trip of the winter yesterday from Warwickshire up to Sheffield and back (190 miles exactly). Decided to treat it as a bit of a test to see what upper range I could get in typical winter conditions (Started off at -3 and barely above 0 all trip!), plus a few snow flurries on the way. Driving was very conservative (On the motorways I used adaptive Cruise Control set to 60mph).

Journey was approximately 90% on motorway (or dual carriageway), with the other 10% being typical town driving. I was using Eco Pro and B mode in the towns, Eco Pro and D mode on the motorways (D mode set to adaptive regen).

I was pretty impressed with the range achieved, without any charging en-route we did the 190 miles at 3.1 m/kwh and still had 50 miles range left on return home. We had cabin heat set to a toasty 23 (but I wouldn't let the Mrs use the Heated Seats!). Cabin was pre-conditioned before departure while still connected to home charger, and preconditioned from battery power before starting back.

All in all very happy with that.
