G01 X3/G02 X4 M40i One of common issue

Hi folks,

From the few weeks ago, I faced squeak noise issue from driver side suspension.
The issue is occurring when I reversing with steering wheel almost turned to left side.

After I noticed issue I brought my vehicle to the dealership service center,
First time, service advisor said it is normal for performance models designed like that, and she suggested me to have a test drive with the one of the mechanic in the service department, and after my mechanic drove my car, he said it's common issue for g01 / 02 x3 and x4 that defective of driver side front control arm bushing.

And he said the parts are backorder and I have to wait for 3 months to get the part in.

so I'm waiting for the part to come in, but recently one things come to my mind.
Is it ok to replace bushing for only one side? or better to have all sides to replace at a time?
Please let me know if you have any experience like mine, and check your cars if you guys have same COMMON issue like mine too.

Thanks!

The bushings are not available standalone. They will be replacing the entire tension strut assembly instead. According to the SIB, they should be replacing both of them.

I know that BMW has revised the front tension struts like 2-3 times, and I'm surprised that this issue is still ongoing for MY22-23 LCI G01/G02. If I recalled correctly, all LCI G01/G02 should've been fitted with the latest revision, i.e. the part number listed on the SIB. But I could be wrong.

It would be nice if BMW would change the hydro bushing to solid bushing lol. These hydro bushings are very prone to fail prematurely...

Thanks for sharing your experience.
I will get that SIB over to my service advisor.

BTW, why you having this issue for 2-3 times?
Are you experiencing same issue after you replaced tension struts?

I don't have this issue. I was saying that BMW revised this tension strut like 2-3 times but it is still failing prematurely.

ohoh I misunderstood what you post.
My service advisor just confirmed SIB that you provided is exactly what I'm experiencing.

I have a stupid question because it’s been years since I’ve last dealt with a SIB-covered repair. Does this indicate the service is only covered if the car is still under original warranty or does the fact that a SIB exists mean that it is covered for a longer duration than factory warranty?

That's very interesting.
A year ago I posted (under a different account, which I totally forgot I have then - sargein) this thread:

https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showt...hlight=sargein

My problem with this bushing - is that it makes my steering really "light" in the central position, like a toy car basically.
I showed this video to guys at the service department and left the car for a day back then - as a result they said that everything is fine and I should not be bothered.

Do you have a similar effect or just noise while reversing? My warranty will expire soon and it would be nice to have this stuff replaced by BMW.

I wish that is the case but no... The coverage defers from SIB to SIB, and the coverage detail is stated in the SIB under Claim Information.

For this particular issue, it is only "Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars." So even CPO won't cover this.

I have this issue once in a while, it didn't happen everytime, went to dealership twice, leave the car there for days, they just told me "we can't replicate the sound" ....

I even show them the recording video and they acknowledged but seems like the only way for them to actually diagnose or fix is to physically see the issue, in this case, hear the sound.

Pretty frustrating but it is what it is. I don't have time to just drive to dealership and hope for the sound happen.

Mine was made always noise when I reversing with steering wheel almost to the left, and I felt little clap under the vehicle when the noise occurring.
I showed them this SIB to the service advisor, and they said I'm experiencing exactly what written in SIB...

I think BMW understood this one is due to defective part, so you may ask your local dealership if they can cover without any out of pocket.

I've brought this SIB to the attention of the service advisor today.
He said that bushings are not covered by the CPO warranty, so don't wait too long to get it replaced...

Anyone happen to have a link to the video mentioned in the SIB? My M40i makes a thump sound turning out of my garage (full steering to the right). Want to see if its the same as the SIB covers.

Back in the day we used to replace our E9x control arms with the M3 arms because they were solid and added camber. I wonder if an X3M retrofit would be a comparable endeavor.

That’s a really good idea. I’d bet the X3M tension/cntrl arm comes with a stiffer solid bushing for performance. I may try this route instead of getting the problematic M40i part. Just found out today that both my front tension arm bushings are torn.

Had dual tension strut replacement done this week. Car would experience a "knock" sound when in reverse with the wheel cranked to the left, especially going down an incline. Diagnosis and replacement was done in 24 hours, all costs covered by BMW. 2023 X3 M40i took delivery August '22, ~10k miles.

That's only possible if you also change the steering knuckles to the X3M ones. They are completely different.

Good point, I had looked them up and found that not only is the shape much different, the X3M part is missing the ball joint to bolt to our knuckles.

I'm glad this thread bumped up. I heard something yesterday when backing out; though I had driven over something. Will monitor.
