Exhaust burbles in 2023/2024 M40i LCI

For those with newer models, do you get burbles in sport+? How and when?

I'm coming off a 2021 M340i lease (first model with mild hybrid) and I basically never get burbles (real or fake) -- maybe a few muted ones when manually downshifting from 2-1 coming to a stop.

Some folks have said they can get it revving to 4k RPMs and letting go, but I've never gotten that in my sedan.

Have bimmercode as well, tried various things:

- ASD on, with expert things like asd_burbles on as well
- Coded Sporty or depends on driving mode engine sound config

Getting a 2024 M40i soon, and wondering if it'll be the same as my current M340i or if I can expect it to be slightly better

Got a completely stock '23 M40i LCI and my bowl of cereal in the morning is louder, this car needs some help in that department. It's pitiful that a Toyota Camry TRD sounds way better...just pitiful!

Only time I get consistent burbles and shift farts in my '21 is when I am in Sport AND the trans is in S (or paddle shifting). When the shifter is to the right (D)... nothing. Has to be programming/tuning.

Unless of course you drop some coin on the exhaust system

It can be made to be obnoxious at a price

oh whoa, so you guys don't get anything at all, even manual shifting in sport plus?

I've seen some folks on the forums say they get burbles, others nothing.

I’m not sure why people are saying you don’t get anything. 24 M40i here, and in sport mode you definitely get “snorts” on up shifts (at least if you’re accelerating hard enough) and you get some burbles on the overrun. It’s definitely muted bc of all the noise insulation. But just the other day I was messing around, was parked, had the tailgate opened, and just rev’d in park a few times, there was absolutely burble even reving to only 3k RPM.

Again, it’s not a huge amount nor particularly loud, but it’s definitely there.

Amen brother, Iv e got like theee threads on this so not going to RE type it all but there must be a simple solution like rear muffler out and something else in it’s place
My sons m340 with the Mpe sounds amazing I was expecting the same and very dissapointed when my car got here to hear it, or better yet not to hear it

Oof yeah if my m340i wasn't a lease I would've gotten the MPE.

Even though it's quiet, does it still have any pops or burbles? Or is it missing everything along with being quiet?

It’s missing everything compared to my m340… don’t get me wrong it sounds good, just neeeds a big boost in volume . I’m going to fix this somehow … getting close . I’m thinking vibrants in place of rear muffler… if that’s not enough then the y pipe in place of mid reso… if that’s not enough then mini race bullets, if that’s not enough then it’s not meant to be.

Running CG Precision downpipe and valve controller in my 22 LCI.

Nice burbles in sport plus and valves fully open

Coming from a 2020 X3 M40i...now in a 2023 X3 M40i (4 months now).

They took away the THUNDER.

In Sport and Sport Plus it will burble, but no more pops and bangs.
Also, no more forcing "Sporty" engine sound in any mode in iDrive options.

Not sure what they were thinking, but I complained when they called me for feedback (not the dealer, but BMW Welcome Team).

Many improvements on the 2023 vs 2020, but exhaust is not one of them.

To update on this thread, took delivery of a 24.

Compared to my 21 M340i, I think it’s overall better (surprisingly). I think the 21 and 22 folks got screwed with the sedans unless they got the performance exhaust.

1. The subtle burble is definitely easy to get out. Sport plus, accelerate hard and let go around 3k. Traction off seems to make it happen more frequently. Basically never happened in my m340i

2. There’s a loud thump on upshift when accelerating hard. Seems like ASD but def noticeable. Also didn’t have this in the g20

3. I can force the sporty engine sound always with bimmercode. Haven’t tried getting burbles yet.

The burbles are nice but subtle, can barely notice if listening to music. Easiest way to get it is to downshift and accelerate before letting go. I either hold left paddle down or better yet, move shifter right to auto and then back left to manual, the car will automatically downshift 2-3 gears. Accelerate hard and all the noises come out

Not the best sound but still more than the 21 m340i.

Also have a 24 M40I, definitely hear a ton of burbles and it’s fairly loud in sport as well. It’s not as loud as an SVJ 😅 but it’s loud enough in my opinion.

I have a 23 and feel like one of the software updates made it even more tame/lessened the burbles (vs when I bought it). Anyone else feel that way? I can still get it to burble but it's just less than what I remember when I first got it.

2023 here. In Sport+, I get some, in D, while downshifting, and it will make a noise upshifting too. It'll make a noise upshifting in Sport as well.

Manual shifting in Sport+, it'll make noise going from 3rd to 2nd, and 2nd to 1st, no issues there.

But, way way less noise than the older models, and not much you can do without changing some hardware.

Tons of videos on youtube
