A personal choice, but for us it just makes the back look too cluttered.

For the ultimate clean look with a true 'slick top', here's what I hope to be able to order in the 2023 line-up if BMW allows us to delete the truck-like obtrusive roof rails (which ruin the aerodynamic high-performance M appearance). I've also included paint-matched rear reflector inserts from IND-Distribution.

And for kzg1969 - here's his without the X3M badge as well.

Until this car, I’d always de-badged. I’ve put it down to a bit of badge snobbery on my part, as it’s the first M car I’ve ever had.

I remember when it used to be a no cost option to de-badge when ordering a car. Now we have to do it ourselves.

I seem to recall a post here stating they were able to order their X3 debadged.

BMW hit the mark with this series for a number of us. We just returned from a 750 mile, 36 hour trip and are already looking forward to heading back out for the next one. Interstates, country roads, winding curves along the shorelines - the F97/98 just make the miles that much more enjoyable for us.

I will say the anti-roof rail Gods were in full force once again, though, as every Macan and Cayenne we passed were once again sporting tops without rails and showing off that they could at least order them that way...

@Max Well how many miles now on the LCI? And do you feel like the interior screwed-togetherness has held up to your initial impressions (even compared to your pre-LCI)?

Close to 7K. We still get the sense it's more refined than mine in many areas as previously discussed, including interior. With that said, I still enjoy my 2020 immensely and don't plan on trading it unless they allow the roof rail deletion with painted trim in 2023.

I took LCI-pre LCI headlight comparison images this morning while answering a question @Tricky401 raised about cornering lights in a thread recently ( https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1906897 ). It was foggy which highlighted the beams well (and also a full moon). The LCI's matrix array as Tim@codemybimmer discussed in post# 184 illuminates the cornering angle when the steering wheel is turned ~180 degrees and occurs in Park, Reverse, and Drive. The pre-LCI's mechanical unit is more graded as it seems to start turning with steering wheel input, not as much "on or off" as the LCI's system (at least on my brief assessment this morning). Both work fine IMO and functionally I don't sense much of a difference between these approaches, although the garage door views seem to suggest the LCI has a sharper demarcation than the older tech.

The garage door photos shows the LCI has a much sharper demarcation than the older tech indeed.

On that color the lack of rails makes a huge difference. They do not bother me too much on my dark graphite metallic because they blend in more.

I guess some people use them which is why BMW includes them in the build? I haven’t seen anyone use them in person though.

They do actually make for great "grab handles" when on the small step ladder washing the roof . Had a couple of close shaves with my VW Transporter when on the steps washing the roof , WashMit worn on the right hand and using my left hand to support myself , which on the odd occasion has slipped , almost causing a fall off the steps

Agree they’re not quite as noticeable with darker paints, which is one of the reasons I went with BSM on my 2020. Also, if one chooses to pursue rail deletion later the rubber windshield trim (which doesn’t stop at the roofline) doesn’t stand out as much either.

But I still can’t stand the rail aesthetic regardless of paint color…

No doubt some may want roof rails to carry cargo or as a grab bar - and I have no problem with BMW offering them as an option. But I do take issue with them being forced on every build as standard whether they’re wanted or not. We’ve owned three F25s, two G01s, and three F97s and never once used or wanted them. Maybe BMW’s market analyses have shown the majority of X3/X5 owners like them, so even if most of those owned base models they just wanted to simplify production across the board?

But Porsche, Jaguar, Maserati, Lamborghini and Range Rover make roof rails an option (see below), and F96 owners even have that choice here in the US, so this isn’t a complex or bespoke production issue. It also appears the XM recently shown testing at the Ring has a slick top without rails. So hopefully BMW (or at least M) will relax its stance for 2023+ models and make them an option - at least for their true M lines where aerodynamics and performance should be a higher priority for M Enthusiasts rather than roof cargo...

Performance SUV Mnfrs offering roof rails as options:
Porsche – Macan GTS $410; Cayenne GTS $830
Jaguar- F-Pace SVR $400
Maserati- Levante Trofeo Price N/A but shown as an option
Lamborghini- Urus (doesn’t even have rails?)
Range Rover- Sport SVR Carbon Edition $1,400

Yes, on both of our X3MCs.

Installed her OEM CFRP side mirror covers yesterday so took a comparative image with mine, which also provides a lower rails-no rails view.

a couple days ago I was talking to my CA and he mentioned the latest restrictions list was even longer than in March production. good news for some perhaps... panoramic sunroof might not be available on upcoming builds. I know its not roof rails, but sort of relevant to the roof discussion.

Good news indeed. The X3MC should come standard without moonroof or rails.
