Catalytic converter CEL only 63k

My wife’s 2018 X3 m40i with 63k miles had its CEL come up with error 180001
Catalytic converter efficiency below limit value. CPO warranty just expired in August. Anyone had their catalytic converter go bad this early. It’s only 63k. I don’t see how this could happen this early.

I would think you should be able to get that replaced under emissions warranty if it’s the factory cat.

I would think so too. BMW emissions warranty is 8/80,000.

I agree with the prior comments that the catalytic converter is covered under the longer emissions warranty. That said, it is less common for them to chemically fail. Usually they get clogged (hence the “low efficiency”) by something going wrong in your engine like passing oil or antifreeze out with the exhaust gas. I’m not sure if that failure mode is covered by the warranty or not as it really isn’t the cat’s fault if it’s getting sprayed with liquids.

Are you experiencing any symptoms besides the CEL? For example, sluggish acceleration or worse fuel economy than before? If so, it’s probably clogged vs. chemically failed. Unless you fix whatever the root cause is within the engine, it’s pointless to pay for a new cat as it will just get clogged again.

It wouldn't be the O2 Sensor?

In the USA the Federal Emissions law requires manufactures to cover emissions components for at least 8yr/80k miles.

My oem cat is sitting in my carport storage. Has maybe 100-200 miles on it tops

Don’t why anyone would want to reinstall an oem unit but it’s available if needed. Just pay shipping costs

Many times it's just the O2 sensor that's failing. Those are typically a far less expensive thing to replace
