Just for comparison what do you think it would cost if you car had plain old mechanical locks... you would have to replace all the mechanical locks in the car to insure its security including, maybe, one in the steering column. My guess to do that would cost in the neighborhood of $750. Still it seems like the dealer you bought it from should cut you a break on the price... |

Prior to the new generation of keys (key card, display key, etc)...BMW could disable a key since it had a specific key nbr assigned to it in the EWS control module. The newer keys/remotes that came with the F series BMWs were similar in that only two remote fobs could be programmed to the car at one time (if you had comfort access). So if you lost one, and purchased a replacement...when they code the replacement to the car...along with having the remaining key...the lost key would be removed from the CAS module.
I haven't looked into the G series yet...but I bet the same thing can be done. The lost key can probably be disabled...and will automatically be disabled if you replace it with a new one that gets programmed to the vehicle. EDIT: just looked...and yep...the lost key can be "blocked"...click this link for where the information below was captured. SEE the text highlighted in yellow at the very bottom: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/g...ystem/KVhi3jaX

Try calling a mobile key tech in your area....most of the dealers in my area use this method too since it is cheaper for them. Normally if you get the fob they can program your new fob along with your remaining fob to the car and it should disable the lost key from working. Also usually a lot cheaper if you can find someone who has the BMW coding.

Most likely cheaper in the USA but all dealers want you to show up with ID and proof of ownership as should be the case.

I wouldn't use the key if returned from someone unknown (or even from a neighbour for that matter). You never know who (between the time you lost it a trustworthy neighbour) had it and what he had done. New one only for me. I feel sorry for you OP. I locked myself from apartment a had to pay almost 300€ (not for the lock, but for the glass and labor. yeah.. We have a glass in the front door.. Rented apartment, all neighbours have the same, probably some regulations)

I needed a second fob for an M-B. Cost around $350 including programming, and deactivation of the missing fob. I needed to produce my photo ID and the vehicle title. This was six months ago, in the US midwest.

So found a listing on eBay. Some guy totalled his 2018 X3 and was selling his unused spare. I bought it for 48$ USD. I have a friend who is a mechanic and a BMW enthousiaste. He said that he has a friend that can program the key to my car and remove the lost one for 200$. Mentioned a dealer will not do the work because they want you to buy the entire key from them. So if this works it will cost me about 300$. Mind you it will be his metal key part but I don't care much for that now and can always order just the cut metal key at a later date. Sure beets the 850$ the dealer wanted.
Will let everyone know how it turned out n |
