Lightbulb BMW N20 oil change

PSA:

When changing engine oil, please pour the entire 5L's in the engine.
(N20 engine).

Some people are pouring 4.8L's which is not enough.
Speaking from experience.
Only when we pour in the entire 5L's of engine oil, the oil sensor relays the appropriate engine oil level (right below MAX).

Otherwise, it is below the MIN mark which requires more oil to be poured in.

Not sure if this was mentioned here already.

Hmm, from BMW's official specs I've read, the N20 takes 5.1 quarts. Being the fastidious person I am, I have always added the extra tenth.

I typically follow the TIS for oil capacity since that info comes from the manufacturer of the vehicle, who should know the correct amount.
Reading the internet, I've seen as least 5 different capacity amounts

From the TIS:
Oil supply N20 / N26
  • Capacity, engine oil change with oil filter element without all-wheel drive - Liter 5,0
  • Capacity, engine oil change with oil filter element with all-wheel drive - Liter 5,50

Oil supply N55
  • Filling capacity, engine oil change with oil filter element - Liter 6,50

I just looked, and you are correct. NewTis was also my source for 5.1 quarts, but 5.5 liters is 5.8 quarts. Who knows where I was looking.

yes, the entire 5L's.

I did pour 4.8L but it's not enough, the oil level is under "MIN" when I pour 4.8L's, so I pour the entire 5L's and it's above "MIN" and under "MAX" when I check oil level again digitally.

Yes, useful information regarding the surface the X3 is on.
Not all gas stations have flat surface...

It's a "X-Drive" option. It's under "X-drive status". See if you can find it, but your's is S-Drive (RWD), so you might not have it...

Yes, I've found different oil capacity listings all over the internet.
I will refer to BMW TIS instead. The WWW can have false info. Go directly to the source (BMW TIS).

I'm not adding 5.5L's.... unless the BMW iDrive system tells me to add more than 5L's.. even though mine is AWD(X-Drive).

Yeah, trust your 7 year old electronic sensor over what the engineers at BMW recommend

ahhh now you got me thinking well it's better to add than subtract, I'll add the .5 and see what happens, if it goes over "MAX", time for a new up-to-date sensor... and drain a little bit of engine oil?

I've only had to do one change on mine so far since buying it, poured the full 5 quart and the oil measured right at the max line, and hasn't budged off it in 4000 miles. 2013 X3 xdrive28i / N20.

Only if there was an ACTUAL OIL DIP stick we can use to measure accurately. Because how accurate is the engine oil sensor???

Just recently Purchased 2015 X3 xDrive28i from Copart.
The car has 92K miles and as I don't know when the last oil change was done, I am planning to do it myself.
The owners Manual says that if i use Valvoline (The Best option in my Country), I should aim for 5W-30.
But on the Valvoline's web-page, when I enter the details of my car, it recommends 0W-20.
What's your experience?
My country has a climate where in Summer temperature can go up to 45C (113F) and in Winter to -10C (14F).

Thank you guys, helped a lot really.

Another question here if possible:
There are a lots of discussion about whether to change Transmission Oil or not. What's your experience?
Mine drives really good without any problems and I want it to continue this way, so should I change or leave it alone?
Don't know whether it was changed by previous owner or not, I'm planning to acquire Carfax history but what is the general situation towards that subject?

Would only do it if planning to keep the car over 100kkm. Would do it at some 60 or 90kkm IF i found decent mechanic since bmw service is too expensive. Know a few friends with bimmers over 150kkm and trans oil never changed...

If you care about the transmission health, change it at the ZF recommended intervals. It's not changing all of it since much of the old fluid remains in the system. By not changing it, the filter fills up with junk. If you wait until the trans has problems, you've waited way too long
