First post, so sorry if it's in the wrong place (again). Went up on a curb in X3 28i MSport with 20" low profile run flats. Tore a chunk out of the rim and bubbled the front tire which was not a surprise, and scraped the back rim coming down, but that tire is fine. Took it into dealer for replacement. Came back w a quote for $10,000++ . Said the impact from the from front tire hitting curb went up and damaged front strut, control arm, thrust arm, outer tie rod, steering rack, steering knuckle, and of course the tire and wheel. WHAT??? I cannot help but think that if this much can break from hitting a curb, then there has got to be some faulty part somewhere or some terrible suspension, or some seriously poor engineering. I don't know much about cars, but the tire did NOT even bounce enough to hit the top of the wheel well and damage the plastic trim there. Seems like there should be at least some room for bounce. IS THIS extent of damage normal from such a small incident or is something faulty? Any ideas? Just turning into neighborhood, swerved and hit square curb. NOT at speed. Just a quick up and down.

While driving on pot holed roads.... I tend to agree with you...our daily driver has 17 inch for the winter set up,..

I've looked at changing them out. It doesn't look like the 18" wheels are recommended with the M-Sport package, but I could go to 19" with 245-45-19 tires. That of course, would cost a few thousand to replace all 4. Would there be a significant enough difference in prevention between the 20" 245-40-20 and the 19" 245-45-19?

Just reread your post and this jumped out. The bump stops will not let the tire contact the wheel arch lining on most cars, and I suspect that is true of the X3. Given that the X3 is a crossover and not an off road SUV, I suspect it does not have a lot of suspension travel. So, something the size of a kerb will eat all the travel and then the suspension is solid. Any side load involved now has nowhere to go except into the suspension parts, hence the damage.

Sorry to hear that. I think any curb climbed at speed would be trouble. I have hopped curbs before in our X3, but that's with kissing the curb at 45* or 90* and then slowly applying throttle
