Drive safely!
BE WARNED... was on my way to have winter tires put on last week... no snow although at -7 degrees around a seemingly harmless curve my X4M just kept right on going across highway and 150 ft. Off side through a field and into a boulder and barbed fence.
Slid off road November 1. Estimated date of completed repairs... " end of December!" Seems as though several German parts are back ordered and won't ship out until 12/12/2019 which puts them here right about Christmas... If I'm lucky I may get my car back 4 months after purchase....: |

As long as no call for ice , freezing rain or snow...you are good. Always warm your tires up...in my M3 at least it shows tire temps. I can get them in mid 50s to 60 F, I can drive in 30 degree weather in confidence. But totally agree that the deal to a winter set is invaluable. I can carve snow pretty well in my M3 on a Real good winter tire. |

Oh wow that's terrible. Sorry that happened! At sub freezing temps summer tires can turn into hockey pucks with virtually no grip at all even in dry. This sounds extreme though.

Very sorry to hear this. Last year when taking the Bullitt with Michi PS4 to get the Nokian Hakkas mounted I had a similar scare. It was 15*F but dry roads... and the Mustang slid off into a bean field. No damage, but scared the crap out of me. Summer tires don't do well in the cold, and they simply don't work *at all* when there's snow on the road.
I'm having the Oregon dealer install Hakkas on the X3 when I take delivery in a few weeks.

In addition to reduced adhesion, summer tires can crack at temperatures below 40 - 45 degree F. That causes permanent damage to summer tires which prevents their safe use even when temperatures warm up.

Is there a good all-season tire available?
I live in CA but plan to take the car on a road trip to Utah when it arrives in a couple of weeks. I don’t need a permanent summer tire on the car and am happy to just run all-seasons. Any good options? |

Tire Rack lists all-season options for the non-Comp X3M, but only dedicated summer and winter tires for the Comp.

You might see if Michi PS AS/3+ is available in the sizes you need.

Not unusual for BMW. The same situation exists with some other M vehicles, which also have no all-season tire options (e.g., M5). It appears BMW prioritizes warm weather performance for such cars and SUVs, limiting their appeal for potential buyers who live where cold weather makes summer tires unusable for part of the year. While some buyers are willing to exchange between summer and winter tires twice annually, others are not. Similarly, while some buyers don't need their M vehicles to be daily drivers, and can keep them garaged when temps are too low for safe driving on summer tires, others don't have that option.

In the UK, most run on summer tyres for the whole year with no tyre issues.

Agree, never used winter tyres in my life even living way up in Scotland. Even my F10 M5 battled through the snow, bit tricky though. Did not seem to affect the grip once summer arrived.

Yet every time it snows or is icy we have utter chaos on the roads 2" of snow is enough to bring any UK town or city to a grinding halt, anything more an we have entire motorways shut people trapped on them for 24 hours etc...yet the myth persists that we don't need to run them. (someone from the UK will be along in a minute to say they drive about on 6" of snow in an M car on summers with zero issues)
