Prior owner had set of plugs and coil packs replace by Dealer at about 50K miles. Cost the guy nearly $1000, ugh Should not need coil packs unless fault detected. Tho I have heard the turbo 6 motors with direct fuel injection are harder on plugs and coil packs than my car (older N52 motor, no turbo, no direct fuel injection) Last edited by Wgosma; 10-06-2021 at 04:36 PM.. |

New plugs, coils and bootmod3 stage 1 (93) tune. Had Dinan bolt on and bootmod3 is light years better in terms of performance, shifts and linear acceleration. Very happy with results. Looking to upgrade charge pipe and FMIC in the spring.

New plugs last week, just oem replacements, gapped down to .025 Seemed to smooth the idle down a bit. Got the oem intake filter housing and tube to the rad support installed as well, right away threw a code for high charge temp. Pulled the sensor and it had a bit of oil on it. Cleaned, replaced all good.
Yesterday, installed a oil catch can. A little bit hillbilly for now, but functional, and after 60km/40m, collected about a teaspoon of water(?) in it. Pick up the trans oil tomorrow (Redline D6), after it cools a bit will tackle either trans, and transfer case and diffs, OR the oil filter housing gaskets. Would prefer to do the gaskets and belt/tensioner/idler at the same time. This is a 70,000km N55. Went looking for the reason my in console power point/cig lighter socket doesn't work. Fuses behind glove box are good (position 54,55 20amp) are good. Took bucket out of console and no power to socket....cup holder socket is still good, are they different fuse?? New owner
Picked up my ‘11 X3 about a month ago, drove it from Monterey CA to its new home outside of Boise ID. Finished changing the oil & filter, new Bosch wipers, air & cabin filters, upgraded the nav from ‘11 to ‘21 maps. Gave it a good wash & clay bar only to find that the finish was in such good shape that we then put clear bra on the nose and front hood.
Looking forward to many happy (s)miles! |

Changed out the transmission oil and pan. Took all of 5 liters of Redline D6 to fill. Runs and shifts just fine, (wasn't a problem before). Wasn't a lot of gunk in the pan, but now I KNOW its clean. Transfer case and diffs next week.
For some reason Bimmerlink stopped connecting to the adapter. Bimmercode still connects just fine. |

Having all driveline fluids replaced at the moment. It's the kind of thing I could do, but would rather not get dirty with, and I likely won't have to do it again for at least 4-5 years so it's worth paying a good Indy to do it (Milwaukee Motorwerks).

Finally got around to replacing the valve cover with Genuine BMW after it would make a squealing noise when car would automically stop due to ASS. Noise is gone, car drives muuuuuch better. I notice much better acceleration and the engine does not feel bogged down anymore. Replaced air filter while I was there even though the old one was not that dirty.
Overall happy to see that the engine is completely clean with no gunk/sludge anywhere. |

Car started misfiring and drivetrain malfunction as I got on the on ramp, what a scary limp mode as I could not get past 80kmh. Nursed it back home and figured bad coil packs. Was able to procure Bosch coil packs which I replaced in the parking lot. Will do the spark plugs tomorrow.

VRSF is what I am leaning towards, but still researching. How difficult was it to install the CHARGEPIPE AND BOOSTPIPE? I was looking for videos, but haven't found any specific to F25 N20.

Is an oil catch can actually necessary for the N55? Also, if a vehicle is not driven daily and is stored often, can an oil catch can help? Like will engine longevity definitely be better with one, or it's not worth it? When looking up past posts, I see so many mixed answers...some say yes, and some say BMW engineers designed the N55 better than N54, so there's less blowby, and you don't need it if you are running stock and not adding boost. One post said "BMS determined the F series N55 had improved PCV to the point that there was little benefit to an external OCC." Looked at this thread: https://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39890 |

From what I've read, the N55 is not as bad as the N54 for oil in the induction system. The more boost, the better chance of more crankcase oil vapors getting in to the inductions tract. The biggest issue with oil vapor is carbon built up on the back of the valves and the area around them. Some vehicles are worse then others. If the induction system is oily, then adding a OCC should help reduce oil in the induction system. It can't hurt adding one if it has proper baffles and is unrestricted. I don't run one on my stock N55, though I have thought about it, don't want to have to do walnut blasting |
