Auto. Parking Assistant: driving out

I’m still figuring out how to use all the features of my new ‘24 M40i.

One of the ones that’s confusing me a bit is the part of the Parking Assistant feature that lets the car take over leaving a space.

Multiple times, when I’ve tried to use the feature, nothing has happened: no arrow to click onto to show the car where to go. I have followed the instructions to the letter, but bupkis most of the time.

Earlier today, I let the car park itself into a fairly tight space. It did so. When I returned to the car, I thought I’d let the car guide me out. Nothing. I opened the owners manual on the screen to double check the instructions. When I went back to the parking screen, the red arrow appeared. I clicked on it, and the car drove me out of the parking space.

That’s the only time I’ve been able to activate it.

What am I missing?

(I searched the archive, but didn’t find another message on point.)

I might be wrong - but never saw something that takes you OUT of a space. The only thing you may be thinking of (unless I'm mistaken) is that shit reversing assistant which is not terribly accurate on mine, but others love. Drive into a space, engage reverse, hit the reversing assistant button on the screen and it will drive about 50m or so backwards where you came from.

The reversing assistant works well for me. It really helps to navigate a large stone wall backing out of my driveway, especially late at night and early in the morning.

No, this does exist. I succeeded at using it once. I can’t figure out how the car decides when to let me use the feature, or why it doesn’t do so more often, or how to activate it reliably, etc.

I did once activate the reversing assistant by acccident, when I was trying to do something else. It felt weird having the car reverse down the street by itself. lol

Here’s a screenshot from the owners manual:

Works great for me, just wished it could remember a greater distance.

Yes. It’s that Step #4 that is the hang up: the indicator arrow almost never pops up.

Perhaps the way it’s parked doesn’t meet the operation requirements as listed ?

That’s what I’m trying to figure out: why it hasn’t been within the operational requirements, when it’s parked in one routine space with a car parked in front and a car parked in back, not too close to the curb, etc. But why then was it functional in another parking space that seems about the same?

[Edited for clarity.]

Some day, I really need to RTFM. I had no idea the car was capable of that. Add me to the folks who love the reverse assistant. Really handy at times.

I got it to work today. The arrow appeared. I clicked on it. The car did its job.

It may just not activate if it thinks that there is plenty of room to pull out.

Time will tell.
