Creaking noise X3 30iM (2019 G01)

Hi,

I want to see if anyone has had this issue and found a fix for it because I’ve taken it back to the dealer 2 times now and the noise keep coming back shortly after the service.

Here’s a few clips of the noise so you know what I mean. One week after picking up the car, video 1 . This is 2 weeks after I got it back from the dealer video 2.

Car runs well, but the noise is driving me crazy. I bought the car from BMW dealer 3 months ago so they’ve been replacing the parts under warranty, but they can’t seem to pin point the problem.

The report for the first service says,

Last visit, we investigate suspension noise coming from driver's side front suspension area. Was diagnosed the top mount needed replacing. Replaced front right top mount and carried out final checks, all ok”

Report from the second service;

Investigate front right is still making a creaky noise after replacing suspension top mount on the front right. Found noise coming from castor arm and requires replacement. Replaced arm and carried out final checks, at time of testing, all ok”

The noise has back now, 3 days after their second attempt at fixing it. I’ll need to take it back to them so if anyone has managed to fix the problem and let me know, I can point them in the right direction.

Thanks!

Does it happen as soon as you start driving or after its warmed up?

It happens as soon as you drive. You can usually hear it when you turn, especially turning into the drive way or into a parking spot.

I have a rear squeak that doesn’t quite sound like this and I think mine is the bushing. I believe there were bad upper control arms in some models of the X3, but I thought it was limited to the 2018 models. Might be worth looking in to.

In the second video, it seems to me that the noise is present whenever you have more than 45 deg steering angle, and the noise is coming from inside of the cabin rather than from the outside.

Is there a noise whenever you turn the steering wheel while stationary? If so, I would think the noise is coming from the steering column switch cluster or the steering column. See this SIB for more details: SIB 61 07 21 - Noises from the steering switch cluster area.pdf

If the noise is only present when the car is moving, then it is probably something else...

Had a similar problem and they said it was the brake rotor cover. They replaced both front brakes under warranty but then another noise popped up. Im curious if they can figure your out so keep us updated.

Thanks for this.

Yeah noise mostly occurs when I do a turn or sometimes, rarely, from stationary on an incline road and accelerate.

pock3trock3t Hi , I have exactly the same issue and found this post. I'm curious if you managed to fix it and what was the issue in the end. I want to give some hints to my repair shop so I don't have to bring it there multiple times .

Hi mate. Has the dealer looked at and replaced the anti roll bar drop link? I had this same sound when turning (on another car not the X3). The mechanic visually inspected the drop links and said they were fine, but I insisted he changed it as they were relatively cheap. That was the source of the sound. Hope this helps.

Hi mate. It was the shock absorber. Got a replacement under warranty. It’s been 3 months and no more noise. Hope it stays that way!

I had the same problem and for me it was a lose part in the undercarriage next to the wheel and when I turned it had contact with the tire! after I fixed that part I had no more noise.
