B58 Rubbing Noise From Engine Bay?
Hi all,
Sorry for the generic "weird noise" post, but I wanted to throw this issue up here to get some input. Over the past few months my M40i had had a strange rubbing/grinding noise from the engine bay, more audible on the drivers side. It is very noticeable on a cold start and fades as she warms up. Sound is inaudible from the cabin and does not seem to change with throttle, really only present at a cold start standing still. Checked codes and they didn't turn anything up. Car has been driving just fine the whole time, so I don't think its critical, but I just want to make sure I'm not grinding some belt down to nothingness. I've looked through several "weird noise" forum posts but haven't found anything similar. Any thoughts? Many thanks! https://photos.app.goo.gl/vfkaGZLq3ia1LEtv6 |

Could be gas. How many miles do you have and it does sound louder than normal it seems. Its a new car get it checked out by the dealer have peace of mind.

Same mileage as mine. Except Im running a lot more hp and different gas. And mine does not sound like that as of yet. Fingers crossed.
Another suggestion is to maybe try running like a fuel injector cleaner, lucas or techron or even to remove water from the gas tank. They definitely will not hurt anything. But if you want to just skip those and have a pro check it out.

I'm also running the first stable bm3 stage 2 map they released for this engine to keep my DME write count low. Could it just be because its an old map? |

I have the same noise on my '20 M340i. Were you able to sort it out?

I have the same noise. Only present during cold start-up and as the car warms it goes away. I had two BMW master techs listen and they say they do not hear anything abonornal. Noise has been there for quite some time.
It is one of those noises, like that waste gate rattle in my N55 that’s been there for over 150K miles and only present on cold start-ups, that we may have to just listen and observe if it gets worse. Too many damn moving parts. |
