That sounds like some grade A bs. More like “We don’t know what’s wrong”

The tech thinks maybe my wife is still leaving it unlocked in the garage and the radio on playing her CD all night. I find it difficult to believe that shutting a $80,000 vehicle off with the button and walking away will kill the battery. They're claiming you have to lock it every time, keep the key far away, press and hold the radio off button, and not leave any papers in the seat. But they said they would investigate and call me in the morning.
Maybe rule it out by locking it every night for a while. Garage or not, I'd never leave mine unlocked.

They see nothing wrong and have telephoned me to come pick it up. Their best guess is user error due to improper shutdown procedure. They say that the start button needs to be pushed twice at shutdown. Push once to kill the engine, wait a second, then push it again to completely shut everything off, then exit the vehicle. They've offered to have an educational session on proper shutdown with my wife and I at pickup today, which I've accepted.

He says they looked at it with their computer which can show exactly what accessory was on for how long and drew XXX milliamps and they see nothing out of the ordinary that could have caused the battery to die.

I did ask where in the owners manual I could find the correct shutdown procedure and they didn't know. I'll update after my educational session this afternoon.

So nothing that would cause the battery to die but it’s your fault?

Weird. If I push the button a second time it treats that add engine start and reminds me to press brake pedal. I push once, wait a second, open door. It shuts of most of the time. I always lock so it shuts of then.

Pushing the start button twice worked on our F25 models, but it has never worked for the G01 or the F97 lines. If iDrive doesn't shut off when you open the door just push and hold the radio on/vol button for a second or so and everything then shuts off (assuming you have a garage in a safe environs where you feel you don't want to lock it).

Sounds like you have a drain somewhere they just haven't identified?

Something is still wrong. Our X3MC has been here since August. One push to shut off. Never locked at night in the garage. Typical week is 30-40 miles per day. Never been on a charger.

They told us to push the start button twice when shutting down before exiting the vehicle. They also mentioned the trick where you hold the radio power button for two seconds to shut everything down. It really does seem odd that such a technologically advanced vehicle will drain its own battery for hours with the motor off. I'll get my wife to follow their procedure and see what happens.

Thanks to everyone for your help and advice.

I’ve only had mine for a month, but it has sat unlocked and not driven for a week at a time (during paint protection).

The other day I had it on for over an hour when hardwiring my radar.

During the week I only drive 4 miles, usually about 30 on the weekend.

Something is wrong with yours and it is not because you are leaving it unlocked.

At around 7:00 AM this morning the X3M alarm went off in the garage. I could not unlock the doors with the key fob and had to use the emergency method of popping the little cover off the driver's door handle and using the steel key inside the fob. Hard to accomplish with the alarm blaring in the garage! I opened the hood and battery voltage tested at 5.86 volts. I jumped it off and drove it for half an hour. I'm going to take my wife to work then take it back to BMW. My service advisor said they intend to keep it awhile. Wish me luck.

Seems an utter farce, just lock the door after exiting the car everything shuts down, I don't know why they are telling you to press all these buttons, just lock the car.

If it's still going flat then there is a issue with the car.

BMW has discovered it was a faulty radio/head unit and has replaced it. It was drawing about an amp and occasionally five amps even when off. They transferred our SiriusXM and are delivering the car to my wife's office and picking up the X5 loaner.

They said they also will be sending us a check for one month of the payment on the car and they are giving us $250 in free parts and accessories from shopbmwusa.

That's pretty nice of them. We love the car and are pleased with the treatment we've received from the dealership. When I get rid of my Raptor, I'll definitely buy a BMW for myself.

Great news!

As an FYIi was messing with the buttons on the left hand stalk and found that we do have a battery charge display option in the lower cluster.

Excellent ! The double button/lock the door stuff isn’t needed.

On a 2020 M2 Competition, if I use a Deltran slow charge battery tender, I use the connection posts under the hood. Does leaving the M2C hood up and open drain the battery in any way during the slow charging?

Thanks!

Their advice to double press on the start button is your indication that they don’t know much about this model. That’s what you do on other models to turn off the electronics, but on X3Ms it’s press and hold the radio power button. They need to RTFM for their own cars.

I had a dead battery too after two weeks. It was defective. Dealer swap and all problems solved. Unfortunately, it happens but is easily resolved.

Just to have input on the issue. My battery had to be replaced while the BMW Genius was going over the controls of the vehicle. Cost me an hour during closing. I'm not mad but something is up with either the battery, the power consumption or the sensitivity of the vehicle saying you need a new battery. Mine would still crank and I asked if I could just drive it off and head home (3 hour drive) and take it locally if it did not clear. Selling dealer insisted on a new battery. Maybe a bad batch of batteries which is acceptable.

Ironwood - Any update on your wife's X3? Mine is going whacky too!
The car not the wife!

Started with the gauge cluster going dead. (Fixed with disconnecting the battery and reconnecting).
Now the car is dead. Voltage measured 6v.

It's hooked up to a CTEK 4.3 to get power to it for the service call tomorrow.

Right? It's on the CTEK charger now... and after 2 hours... still 6 volts.
Ironwood got back to me, they replaced his radio headunit and his wife's car is OK.
Might be my issue too!

For an AGM battery that sounds like it’s defective. Hopefully they get you fixed up - but a flatbed may be in order.
