Stelvio had a much better launch. Not sure if that's due to it having better launch control (both vehicles are use ZF8 transmissions) or driver skill but it's clear the S58 is packing more heat pulling it in like that.

The Stelvio quad weights around 150lbs to 200lbs less but it doesn't have launch control. You just brake torque it. It also has a better hp/tq curve between 2k and 3k rpm than the BMW in that it's more linear. It doesn't have that 50hp/tq hole that the X3M does. I also believe the X3M is underrated a bit more and has 20-30 more hp on the top end than the quads do.

That torque hole you mentioned plays no role when you use LC. I think it’s mostly Stelvio’s lower weight and also X3’s launch was far from perfect. I’m actually not sure if he used the LC at all or simply brake torqued it. X3M has the best high end hp curve in it’s class and that’s why I love it so much. Absolute beast at high rpms.

I know because LC puts you right up near the 3K point where the HP/TQ comes in along with allowing you to build that all that boost. But you can tell they didn't use launch control in this video. He barely brake torqued it before they set off. In this kind of instance the Alfa is better as it hits it's 0-60 numbers with just plain brake torquing. The X3M needs it's LC to hit 0-60 numbers near the Alfa. It's a bit slower if you can't use it. I do agree the M off the line as a bit delayed though.

I don't think the X4M driver held LC long enough. Launch looked poor. Surprising that it reeled in the Alfa.

Most of these drag-racing automotive journalists are simply too lazy to grab the manual and read the launch control instructions. It literally takes 30 seconds. Here is an (admittedly extreme) example:

Same gearbox but different sw. I think the sw on the Alfa give more aggressive change. I had drive of the Alfa the box seems slightly quicker and more aggressive.

Very impressive from the X4M, reeling in the Alfa after going 2-3 car lengths down at the start of the 1/4 mile is some going.

Good Lord.

Vin Diesel clearly left the scene..

Remove stability on that BMW and let us see that again.

How about 409.2 less.186kg x 2.2 = 409.2lbs

That x4 M comp launch was type trash firstly.

The x4 M comp is def faster then that

11.6 seconds
The 2020 BMW X4 M and X3 M Competition both achieved a 3.3-second zero-to-60-mph time in Car and Driver testing. The pair of M SUVs also raced to the quarter-mile in 11.6 seconds at 119 mph. The Competition package adds an extra 30 horsepower to their twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-sixes. I know this is with a race car driver but even with that being said

Alfa site states that Stevio Q weighs 4360 lbs while BMW USA says X4M Comp weighs 4590lbs. So the difference is 230lbs. Not sure where the figures in the video are from.

yeah weight is much closer than video implies, look at C&D tested weights on them. I don't think X4M used LC at all, thats how my X3M takes off from a stop light, but in magazine testing when they used LC properly the 1/4 miles is under 12 seconds every time.

They used LC, you can see it in the video. Proper amount of time to build boost is debatable. What was the elevation? Temps where in the high 70's.

I think they just brake boosted, no LC.

Agreed, Alfa won this race based on exhaust note alone
