Passenger side clicking noise when braking
Hey guys, I have a stock X3MC and this will be my second go round dropping my car off to be worked on for the same issue.. first time I took it two weeks back they replaced the entire wheel hub stating that is why the clicking is taking place upon braking slow to a complete stop... noise came back a few days later. Would love to know what you guys think?
I don't have any confidence that Bmw will be able to solve the problem |

Can you add more details pls... Is it only under braking? Is it rotational (increases with vehicle speed) or a single click? Happens more turning left or right? etc.

For ours, it appears to be coming from the driver's front wheel (difficult to nail down just yet). |

Only happens when braking . Like 5-10 mph braking for a light or stop sign. Seems to be on passenger side . They changed the wheel hub last time ..same noise still there..moving steeering wheel doesn't make any noise . Just when coming to a complete stop

I have an annoying clicking on mine as well when coming to a stop. Both wheels for me. I am thinking its from storing the summer tires in a dusty dirty area and then not cleaning them before installing them again. Bunch of videos online of corvette and charger owners having the same issue with their brembo rotor and brake setup and said that polishing and cleaning the two joining inside pieces corrects the problem. I am going to try this on my next rotation which is coming up to see if it removes the clicking noise.

Keep us up to date - mine has 900 miles and the clicking when coming to a slow(er) complete stop is concerning... I'm scheduling my 1200 mile service (fluids/programming) for the M on Monday (for likely 10 days out) at BMW of Fairfax. |

In the back of my mind I'm like if they can't fix this issue after the third time I don't want to have to lemon the car |

It's the front driver seats. There is a bolt that is wrong size and when car moves slightly side to side you can hear it! Like a clicking....ask your SA bout it, this issue has become very pop. They can and will fix it.

Did the dealer fix this yet? I'm curious - we're headed in to BMW of Fairfax tomorrow for our 1200 mile service and intend to bring this up as an issue. I don't think it's the driver's seat bolt problem, because our sound is rotational in nature and seems to be coming from the underside of the front end (not coming from the interior of the car)... |

So far 300 miles in no noise. The service guy said the noise was from you stomping on the brakes too hard? I'm like I doubt that . He said just take it easy for the first 300 miles on the new pads.. so far so good.. I'm assuming the brakes were the issue?? |

If you're hearing like a metallic ticking noise you may need to install the metal shims behind the brake rotor on the hub surface. It's known on other vehicles for having issues with the lightweight brake rotors at the front.

The dealership test-drove the X3M a couple of times and also noted the metal/metal noise (sounds rotational) when coming to a steady, complete stop. After a couple of up-on-the-rack inspections and consultation with an engineer (somewhere in the BMW system) the determination is that the noise is coming from the expansion pins in the brakes (service rep cited the two-piece rotors as the source of those expansion pins). So, at certain speeds and certain temperatures, those pins are somewhat free to move about and cause the metal/metal rotational clicking sound.
According to the engineer, all X3M and M760 brakes are subject to this sound and it is normal... |

I dunno ... if it were "normal" then most X3's would have it and then someone would fix it so it didn't make noise.

No clicking noise is normal and they're just making stuff up to get you out of the service department, at least that's what it seems. There is nothing about the 2 piece rotor that is meant to move around and if there was, we should all be terrified.

Update: X3M now has 2,200 miles and this 'rotational clicking noise' remains. The sound is like something on a front drive-shaft is hitting on something else as it rotates when braking at low speed coming to a stop.
Anyone else experiencing this? The dealership investigated this at 1,200 miles and claimed it was an expansion pin in the front brakes and was normal. Thoughts? |

A 30 second drive around the building with the tech lead and they took the car for investigation and they are replacing the entire front breaks. Waiting on the parts for over a month, but claimed it's safe to drive in the interim. Should have the part in about about 2 weeks, will report back on if this resolved the issue. Adding service notes as well, hope that helps get your shop to do the same for you. |

Glad it's fixed but replacing the entire front braking system suggests they are just throwing parts at it and don't know the root cause.

Hope some of you can provide thoughts or opinions. I have a 2022 X3MC and started hearing a rotational sound while braking at low speeds (25mph and lower). From the inside it sounds like a creaking of sorts attempting to attach video) and from the outside it’s a clicking sound.
It started about 3 weeks ago between the break in service and now which is 2500 miles. Service department says it’s not an issue and they found no rock or debris or anything making contact.. I’ve read a bit about squealing and this is not that. Please let me know if you’ve had this sound or know what it could be as it’s annoying as hell. Video doesn’t do it justice it sounds like the car is about to fall apart. https://youtube.com/shorts/0oDYhEEaK7Y?feature=share |
