Drivetrain malfunction 2021 X3m only 2300 miles
What's up everybody? New to this forum.
About a month and a half ago I picked up my brand new 2021 BMW X3 M everything has been fine except for the fact that yesterday I got a drive chain malfunction light that came on. I've heard of this problem happening with cars around 70 or 80,000 miles but not brand new with 2300 miles. It's at the dealer right now but they can't look into it until Monday because they're so backed up any ideas what this could be? Not sure if it helps for a few days ago also got a reduced drivers assistance light that came on and right after the dealer "updated the software" within 8 miles it came right back... Not sure if they have to do with each other! Thanks |

More often than not, it’s something small like a sensor, actuator, or some other easily serviceable part.. speaking from my experience with other cars. I wouldn’t worry if it’s BMW’s equivalent of a ‘check engine’ light.

It's nearly impossible to suggest a root cause without examining stored fault codes. I would not worry about. The car is under warranty. The annoyance factor is of course acknowledged.

Everyone appreciate it yeah it's not even that I'm worried about having to pay for anything because obviously it's under warranty but it's just annoying. I'm financing a car and I plan to keep it for a long time and if this is only the first 2300 miles, I can only imagine what 50,000 is going to be like. Not gonna lie I do drive the car hard but I mean it's an M I'm not gonna drive it like a pussy LOL I deff don't go near the redline every often but I definitely have my fun in sport plus mode.

Shit happens, sometimes they just get a bad sensor or part from a manufacturer. It gets installed and fails early. Generally, electronics fail fast and early. Which is good as you want those problems to show up when under warranty.
Long story short, your fine long term. Yes you could have gotten a lemon but odds are very very low. It's almost surely something small and easily permanently fixable. Keep us all updated.

Definitely keep us all updated. I highly doubt you got a lemon too.

There was a thread on this a while ago.
I had this happen plus a few other people, assuming it’s the same issue. It was a turbo wastegate problem. Service techs had to get on with BMW and submit/monitor data and adjust the turbo (#2), I believe. Took a week or so to get fixed. Happened to me after 1-2k miles. |

Got the car back. They said it was the connector that's suppose to connect the turbo to coolant pump was disconnected some how. They simply reconnected it. Still raises an eyebrow as to WHY this would happen though. Glad it's fixed at last

Glad its fixed. It could of been a bad sensor after all that was replaced but the story you got was a bit different. Either way quick fix and not catastrophic so thats somewhat a good call.

Normally I would scoff at this diagnosis, but sadly it seems this is possible given some of the quality issues coming out of Spartanburg.

Error popped up while the wife was driving. She was close to the house so she brought the car home. She stated at a stop light the message popped up. She accelerated away from the light with an obvious reduction in power. When she arrived home I noticed the rough idle. I had her shut it down, lock it with the fob and restart it. The error went away. I checked the vehicle status in iDrive as well as the MyBMW app - no issues displayed. I drove it like I stole it for about an hour, 2 different highways, street, in all modes “efficient, sport and sport plus”, and wasn’t able to detect any performance issues. As I don’t have the BMW scan tool to run more in-depth diagnostics, I’ll take it to the dealer so that they can run through it. I am not overly alarmed as this is my 17th Bimmer and they all have had their various quirks from HPFP to being stranded in a new 550i with 700 miles (bad fuel level sensor). Notable exceptions E39 528 and e92 ///M being the most reliable - thus far Looking to stretch the F97’s legs to South Florida at the end of the month. Hoping it’s just a fluke anomaly- we’ll see.

I just got this message as well. Mine is a 20 with 1,600 miles. It went away after a minute before I could take a picture. Does the car store the code that triggered the warning light?

Same thing happened to me. 2020 X3MC with 10600 miles.
Message went away but I wasn’t taking any chances since I had a CEL come up the week before. Diagnosed as wastegate related and then pointed to injectors 2 and 4 malfunction. Replacement needs BMWNA authorization because “the engine is new” but the claim reviewer “doesn’t work Friday’s”. Now I’m stuck in a base X3 for a week. First and probably my last bimmer. I value my time and my Lexuses, while not as fast, have been drama-free. |

Dealer Diagnosis for me was a (1) time misfire on Cylinder #4. No other related issues prior too, or after logged. So for now, fingers crossed I am chalking it up to a single event that “I hope” does not reoccur.
