n55 wastegate rattle fix!

While gutting my catalytic I removed the entire unit since I was replaceing my 02 as well for maintenance reasons. I reached up and could easily see why the wastegate rattles by grabing it and and watching it shimmy back and forth on the shaft!

I took some stainless airplane wire and wraped it around the shaft and wastegate plate then twisted it together to take up all of the play. This eliminated all of the shimmy that was present and I now have now more rattle!

I have a couple of pictures but as stated in my other threads I have received an error msg when trying to upload them

Anyways if you grab the gate you will easily see what I talking about.

Uh, what you did is a horrible idea, the play that exists is there for when the metal parts expand. It gets hot in there, you know.

Just wait, you'll have a stuck wastegate in a few weeks and won't even think this is related

I can asure you that will not be the case...lol

I've been running it for a month already with no issue and no it is not suppose to have that rattle/play.

Looks like a good idea 💡 with your fix, if mine ever rattles I'll be sure to think of this method.

My wastegate has that same play, but I do not have any rattle or anything running out of spec. I'm telling you, that is meant to be there for the heat/cool cycles that the turbo and wastegate go through. Ask any competent BMW tech and you're going to get the same answer.

It's 2022 and the fix is still going strong!
