What do you mean, because if you were to order one it would be here in the USA at the South Carolina plant? Any options not installed at the factory should just be dealer installed accessories.

Not exactly.

There are some options that are available at the port as well when the car arrives. Like exhaust, spoilers, etc. When the car is shipped from factory and is waiting at the port for delivery to dealership is when those can be installed.

Anyone else knows differently please educate me

I'm skeptical of this concept...

Happens a lot for M3 and M5. Customers who add port accessories that are not able to be added from the build shot alone. I don't think X3 can get port add ons to my knowledge.

I'm surprised there are many PIO options on a BMW. It was a way of life with Subaru, there were many, many options that could be installed at the port. Never liked it because you never got the parts that were removed during the upgrades.

Everyone is correct, but he asked about the X3 M40i and he lives in Seattle. His build would come from South Carolina and would take a train to the west coast, then truck; it wouldn't travel via ocean thru the canal to just go across the country. Am I wrong in this statement then, that no port installed options & just dealer installed accessories?

X3's are built in the US so it won't be at a port.

JFYI - mine will be at a port in the process of making its way to my dealer. First, train from SC to the port of Seattle, from whence it will be trucked to my dealer inland.

The existence of a port does not seem a critical factor here. More importantly, the question would seem to be: Does BMW have sufficient volume of cars through the port that need prep to justify setting up the infrastructure to install such parts. Oakland/Long Beach, Jacksonville, yes, seems to make sense since so many cars are coming in that way (but no X's).
I suspect that the activity at the Seattle is simply centered on a yard to transfer from train to truck.
So, since X's delivered domestically really do not get on a ship (requiring more protection against salt air) and need prep before delivery, seems the affected parts would be dealer installed.

When BMW imports a vehicle into Canada or the US, they clear customs and are taken to a Vehicle Distribution Center. There, shipping damage is repaired and port installed options are added to the vehicle. I had a 335 a number of years ago with M Performance Parts installed at the port in Halifax. This link is from a few years ago but shows the VDC facility in Port Huemene in California.

https://www.m3post.com/vpc/index.asp.htm

X3's built in SC do not go through a VDC. They travel via rail or truck (or both) to the dealer. They do not have Port Installed Options available to them.

This may not be the case for the X3's arriving from South Africa to North America. Those vehicles I believe go from Durbin to Bremerhaven and then to NA. These vehicles may have some PIOs as they do not follow the conventional routing for most SC built X3s.

I asked about port installed option on my 2022 X3M. I was told that any accessories would be installed by the dealer since it did not pass hit the normal PDI location.(SC to Chicago) I did the PDI installed items on my 2016 M4 but no luck on my new car.

NO PORT when the cars are built in the USA.
What would be the difference between a PORT installed item and a DEALER installed item?
in the 70's and 80's A/C and other accesories were added at Toyota,Nissan and Subaru when not everyone wanted those options.

Port installed options have no labor charge and can be residualized in a lease. It’s also added to the Monroney sticker, which can’t be done on dealer installed parts.
