IND | Sterckenn F97 X3M / F98 X4M Carbon Front Lip Install Guide

Tools Required:
  • 8mm socket
  • Sharpie marker
  • 6mm drill bit
  • Plastic rivet tool
  • OEM plastic rivets (9x) – 51 77 7 171 004

The Sterckenn F97 X3M / F98 X4M Carbon Front Lip is comprised of three pieces—the larger center section and two sides. Each piece installs independently, allowing easy replacement of a single section should any damage occur. This installation was performed using an automotive lift, but is possible to conduct on the ground with safe and proper use of jack stands should a lift not be available to you.

Installing the Center Section:
Step 1: Locate and remove the four 8mm screws on the underside of the bumper. They will be located just in front of the factory oil cooler. (Indicated in Red)

Step 2: Temporarily install the center section by aligning the lip’s pre-drilled provisions with the four newly vacant screw holes. Re-install the factory hardware to secure the center section in place.

Step 3: Once satisfied with placement, you will notice there are an additional five pre-drilled holes in the Sterckenn center section. Use a black permanent marker to mark these holes and then subsequently remove the center lip. (Indicated in Blue)

Step 4: With the lip removed and using the holes marked in the previous step, use a 6mm bit to carefully drill into the factory bumper. Take your time here—you want to drill through the lower section of the factory bumper, while preventing the bit from protruding through the top.

Step 5: We forego using Sterckenn’s supplied hardware kit here. After re-installing the Sterckenn center lip with the four factory 8mm screws, use five OEM rivets to secure the rest of the lip to the bumper with a rivet gun. (Indicated in Green)

Installing the Two Side Sections:
Step 1: You’ll notice there are two recessed channels on the OEM bumper. Locate and remove the 8mm screw on each side. (Indicated in Red)

Step 2: Temporarily install each side piece by aligning the lip’s pre-drilled provision with the newly vacant screw hole. As an alignment guide, ensure the back of the Sterckenn piece lay parallel to the OEM bumper.

Step 3: Once satisfied with placement, you will notice there are an additional two pre-drilled holes in each Sterckenn side pieces. Use a black permanent marker to mark these holes and then subsequently remove each side section. (Indicated in Blue)

Step 4: Use a 6mm bit to carefully drill into the factory bumper using similar precautions as the center section.

Step 5: We once again omit Sterckenn’s supplied hardware kit in favor of OEM rivets to make installation easier. Re-install each side section with the factory 8mm screws, and, once properly aligned, use the rivet gun to affix four OEM rivets into the remaining provisions on each side piece. (Indicated in Green)

This is as close as it gets to imagining this product on your own vehicle before adding it to the shopping cart. Thanks for sharing!

Any noticeable difference in strength using the rivets versus the supplied bolts for the additional holes? Trying to decide how I’m going to mount it

Great write up and nice lip.

One suggestion, I have had much better luck drilling plastic with a spade bit rather than a regular wood/metal bit.

The spade bit cuts the plastic as a hole and reduces the chance of cracking. The point also makes centering easier.

May not be an issue here, but figured I would share.

Edit, for those with dark vehicles, they sell silver sharpies
